Kindle for Android and Kindle for iOS are kept up-to-date with KFX format features and the latest DRM.

It used to be possible to obtain Kindle books in KF8 (azw3) format with removable DRM using Kindle for Android up to version 4.17 released in 2015. There are still some instructions on how to make use of it in the DeDRM plugin documentation.

The DeDRM FAQ indicates that using Kindle for Android is no longer possible and recommends using Kindle for PC/Mac instead. Now that things have changed it might be worth tracking down an old APK to see whether or not it can still be made to work.

Could it work with an emulator like Bluestacks, perhaps?

FYI B&N books are pretty easy to DeDRM now from the Windows Nook app.

I don’t know. If someone tries it hopefully they will report their results.

On Kobo you can read a synopsis without even opening the book. I'm surprised you can't do that on a Kindle.

You can read the synopsis of direct downloads via the Kindle store, but this doesn't work with sideloaded books or with wifi off. Certainly the way Kobo does it is better, like most other metadata stuff.

Would you happen to have the MD5 checksum of the APK for 4.17?

EDIT: I found a safe copy.

Kindle for Android:

I acquired a copy of com.amazon.kindle-4.16.0.75-1145045067-minAPI16.apk, installed it into BlueStacks 5, and signed in.

I was able download this book (published February 10th), but then got this error:

Size:	433.6 KB
ID:	199770

But then I was able to read the eBook anyways.

And then I found these files in a asin-named subfolder in /Android/data/com.amazon.kindle/files/

Not very familiar with Kindle files so I don't know if these would be usable.

Will also need to look up whether Android Debug Bridge can be used with Bluestacks

Well, if you're shaky-fingered like me, you may often open the book trying to open the menu to get to the details

In case you missed it, you can tap and hold in on a book in My Books, which will bring up a menu that may be a little easier to work with. This is what I do since trying tapping on the "..." often opened the book.

Ah, this explains what has happened to me. I just got a new PC and installed K4PC v1.17. I was able to download all but 1 book - published after Jan 3. Now it makes sense at least. I thought I was losing it! I do have an eink kindle so I'll try and get the book on my PC/into Calibre that way. thx for the post!

Unless your Kindle is an earlier model then a PW1, you won't be able to remove the DRM or get the eBook from the Kindle into Calibre.

I think mine is old enough. At least, I was able to do it in December. Has something changed?
