No. If you say "I saw him" or "She sat down" in Estonian, there is no way to convey the gender of the person you saw or the person who sat down. You must specify that separately, if it's necessary, or not use the third-person pronoun at all. For example, there often are dialogues between a man and a woman in English-language books where only pronouns are used to indicate who spoke (He said - She said). Can't do that in Estonian, as there is only one gender-neutral third person pronoun. So you must use other methods, like in a dialogue between two men or two women, to indicate the speaker (Martin said, the nurse said, the girl said and so on).
Interesting, thanks. It makes me wonder how much work must involved translating into English from languages with dozens of genders, suddenly having to be compressed.

It matters because some come to MR after having a problem and finding something here via a web search. If calibre is spelled wrong, then these searches could fail.

There are other languages besides English.
And Google Translate translates Calibre to caliber.
That's the way it is and everyone has to deal with it somehow.
If a writer notices this, he may correct it - if not, then so be it

I would call this a discussion, rather than an argument.

(One may surely [don't call me 'Shirley'! ] feel that this discussion is not appropriate to this thread; but then, if so, I'm sure an Active Moderator may inject a warning or even create a new thread for this discussion.)

Have a nice day.

Did you see my post? I often transpose letters by mistake, but Google is pretty good at detecting context and autocorrecting 'caliber' to 'calibre.'

I suspect the most helpful posts spell it correctly.

But Google does not autocorrect caliber to caliber when it's incorrectly spelt on MR.

The thing is, they are not mispelled, since both are correctly spelled. One in US, the other in UK spelling. At least if it comes to the inner diameter of a gun barrel bore. Good for Google to do this correct and as expected.

So I was out of town and STUPIDLY bought a couple of books published in February. K4PC of course told me to go to hell when I tried to download, so I went to return them*. In the return reason drop down, one of the options was 'digital rights management'. Is that new?

*One of the books I was able to return, the other not. Both were purchased the same day and were published by the same publisher. I suspect my lack of refund option is due to my having purchased it with the $3 Kindle points credit. Any idea how I might still return it?

You may be out of luck, but you at least did better than I did.

I per-ordered a book in December that was going to be published (DRM Free) in January. In the mean time, they changed all the rules and when I went to return it (no DRM option on the return for me) I was told it was past the return window. The return window clock started when I per-ordered, not when it was actually available.

It did show me that I was wrong and that my opinion of Amazon COULD actually get lower.

You could always just get a used eink Kindle to add to your account. It will pay for itself if you get the digital credits anyway and use them towards ebooks.
