Amazon and DRM changes

Yes. Books are downloaded from My Account > My Books. DRM-free books you download directly ePub. DRM'd books are small ACSM files; use use either Adobe Digital Editions or the Calibre DeACSM/ACSM Input plugin alongside DeDRM to get the ePubs.

Nope. I can't stand to have extensions hidden. But there aren't any on the kepubs downloaded directly to my Kobo from Kobo or in the folder where Kobo Desktop downloads its ebooks. Hence my confusion. Sirtel answered that it was probably epubs sent to your Kobo from calibre via the Extended Driver. I don't actually know what that means, but I take it they're not directly from Kobo. When I'm sideloading books to my Kobo, I just do regular epubs.

The filename does not have an extension whether I look at them on Windows, Mac OSX or Linux. It does not matter how I set the file extension display on Windows since the files do not have an extension, just the 36 characters that make up the filename. I've attached a screenshot of opening the kepub directory on a Kobo ereader. Please notice that in the dropdown, File name extensions is checked.

Not to mention that if I have a file whose filename is filename.kepub.epub and hide the extensions, it will show up as filename.kepub and not just filename.

But that's the point. A "DRM free" kfx really still has DRM, it can't be converted.

That wasn't true when I tried it. I have the latest deDRM and I'm using caliber. The DRM free book I bought and did not convert I had to transfer it via an eink Kindle. The error specifically said that it had DRM

Then this book was not DRM free. As far as I know, there are no DRM-free KFX books from Amazon.

So we are back to point one. Amazon doesn't respect the publishers' request to sell their books as DRM-free when they require so.

EDIT: and to make this worse, they deceive their customers when they keep writing "At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied" and that's not true.

As far as I can tell that text appears in the descriptions of books and is provided by the publisher, not Amazon.

Perhaps it should be reworded to say, "The publisher has requested that Amazon sell this book without DRM. Amazon may choose to ignore us."

Personally, I prefer unhyphenated and justified. This does result in the occasional line getting some odd-looking spacing, though.

I seem to vaguely remember someone saying hyphenation was more useful on languages that had a lot of very long words (German, for instance).

I am curious how aware the publishers are about this....
