Thanks, guys. When I was speaking to the Doc today, (Tuesday) I realized to my horror that come Friday, which is really only two days away now, this will have been going on for twenty-eight (28!) damn days, four full weeks. As you see, I sit here at 3:25am, typing. Why? Because it hurts too much to lie down.

Dammit. What I really don't understand is, sure, I can comprehend baby steps. I can understand that s**t takes time to heal, you're older now, you're less robust, yadda-yadda, but OMG, what I was not remotely prepared for was this nonsense where suddenly, like this week, it gets horribly worse for no apparent reason. Why???

I was sitting here, earlier today (now yesterday), minding my own business and without thinking--I just lightly scritched my ribcage. You know how it is; you're not paying attention, something very slightly bugs you, and without giving it a moment's thought, you move your hand over (wherever) and you "scritch-scritch," very lightly, no real weight to it, right? Just...you'd never even notice it? You use two fingers, maybe, even.

Oh, yea, right. That was all well and good for about seven seconds and then HOLY MOTHER! This Light-saber-molten lava spill just exploded out, all over my torso. Thought I was going to die. Then, just for S&G's, of course, did it abate? It byGod did not. And it's been reminding me "Hey, Baby, I'm heeeeere..." since, for about, well...12 hours now.

Hope it goes away soon and you go back to your normal life.

A friend of mine calls it "la culebrilla", a line over her ribcage that aches A LOT. And... as other people has said, if posting here helps you to forget a bit the pain... please, do it.

Yes, my understanding (from my Castilian official "mini-me" in the office) is that "la culebrilla" is indeed Shingles, or the PHN from Shingles. (Postherpetic neuralgia).

Poor thing--does she "merely" mean to talk about Shingles occurrences, or does she have PHN?

No, she suffers it but not PHN yet. In any case, I'm going to talk to her about the vaccine, as it's available at Spain since last year.

Oh, please do. She can have the vax, they say, around 30 days after the rash clears up and belieeeevvvve me, I'm gonna be standing at the front doors of the drugstore the moment that place opens on my 30th day!

I wish I were younger and more something...I think I would launch a side-biz, a non-profit, doing nothing but proselytizing WHY THOU WANTEST THE VAX! LOL.

I'd read it was painful, of course! I mean..who hadn't?

But in hindsight, it's a bit like what you think Strep throat is going to be--just a bad sore throat, right? UNTIL YOU GET IT and then you find out just how horrific Strep can be. This, to me, is like that. Unless you have an immediate relative or friend, with a severe/acute case like mine, you really only see "itchy/ouchy rash," not OMG I'M DYING OR I WISH I WAS.

All my font foolery aside, I think that's what is missing in all the PSA's, public health commercials, etc. around Shingles. They just do not tell it like it can be. They say "if you did this, (pox) and you're that (age) you could..." and people idiotically think what I thought--icky nasty rash. Duh. And my Gran had it, too. She was 2500 miles away from me, but when I visited, I put Lido patches on her back, where she'd had it. She never said how excruciating it was (she was a bloody Spartan, that woman. Never met anyone else like her, truth).

They need people like me, acute/severe cases, and the folks who get it in their eyes, their faces (OMG), the kind of patient who are willing to go on film, to say just how godawful and unlivable and life-interrupting this can be. I'm not willing to stick the old mug on video, but I would certainly be willing to write something for them.

Alcohol takes another young life. A 43-44 year old young man who was friends with my kids back during their church youth group days. Our oldest son was regularly in touch with him via text and Facebook, since our son lives in South Korea. (Home for a visit now until next week)

Not eating, drinking to excess, it seems he had a seizure and died alone. Jason leaves behind his mom & dad, (divorced) and 2 younger sisters who would be 35 and 37 now I think.

Alcohol brings nothing to the table, it only takes. Again and again and again.

Oh, I'm so sorry, Desk. I decided that my genetics were too dicey for the Demon Rum a long time ago and after a night that I oughtn't remember (but sadly do) I quit the hooch--34 years ago and I agree. It takes and takes.

(Although I gotta say, being the only sober person at a wedding blows.)
