I’ve also done that for books I had when younger but aren’t available anywhere in ebook format, often not even in paperback format anymore except second hand.

I suppose getting your own copy scanned by someone else is a grey area if there is genuinely no ebook and the publisher is either gone bust or says they won't make an ebook. Less grey if you've gone blind and want the text to speech. Ray Kurzweil invented / developed OCR for scanners (among the first) precisely to give text to speech for blind.

Also USA court decided it's OK for Google not just to scan copyright works, but even borrowed ones, in entirety. Which seems like a bonkers decision. So maybe it's OK to make ebooks from copyright printed text if you do it for yourself?
It is a grey area because you own the book but there is no eBook available. This is different then owning an LP and downloading the CD version instead of buying the CD. The eBook doesn't exist. The CD does exist.

Why are you entitled to have an ebook just because you own the pbook? The rights’ holders rights extend to format and they’re entitled not to make a digital copy available. Owning the pbook makes no difference in this scenario to not owning the pbook. The only moral action in this case is to use your own pbook to create an ebook. It seems you’re claiming a gray (American spelling) area to justify hanging onto your pbook and having an ebook just the same.

I didn't say I was entitled. I said it was a grey area.

You haven’t explained why that’s gray. Owning a pbook is owning a physical item. How can you use that to justify having an ebook also, when the rights’ holders say you can’t?

You're correct, it's not gray. If you own the pbook, you can scan your own copy and create an ebook for your own use and convenience. Anything else? Nope. Sorry.

I think it’s all gray (grey). Copyright is the right to control copies. Making a copy is technically violating copyright. And yes, I do it too.

Well, the rights holders say you can't remove DRM either. And I'm pretty sure the vast majority of posters in this thread do exactly that. It's hypocritical to chastise others for going against the rights holders wishes while doing the same thing ourselves*.

I agree. Removing any DRM, regardless of the reason, is a type of piracy. Whether you buy a paperback and scan it, buy an ebook to remove the DRM so you can use it on another platform, or remove DRM from KU to keep "forever", etc., in the eyes of the law, you're committing piracy.

It's like stating that guys driving down the highway at 90mph versus someone else going 80mph verse someone going 70mph when the posted speed limit is 65mph. In all 3 cases, each person is still breaking the rules.
