You're missing a closing "/" on that <br> (should be <br/>). Again, it all works on all my stuff. But, I'm wondering if that could be giving you issues on the Kobo with an epub. Unless it's just a typo here, you might try fixing that and trying it on the Kobo again.

Sorry I didn't notice it earlier. I was playing with the same document and ran across it when I did a Check Book.
Yes, I just didn't have it here for some reason

I don't think it matters what it's called, really, I put an example of what I was asking about so it was clear what I needed. Text break, scene separator, marker between 2 parts. I've just ended up putting the 'design' I wanted as text rather than in the code. Not worth the headache.

Thank you all for your help & suggestions

It does matter what it's called because those trying to help need to know what it is you want. If it's called something that we don't know what it is or we think it's something else, we'll not be able to help.

I simply meant that no matter how it's used, be it text break, scene break, marker between sections, it had become too much of a headache, and I didn't think it worth trying to figure out code for what I, specifically, wanted.

I'm glad if the suggestions help others, but I want it set up as shown in my opening post so it looks like the following (centered of course). The few I tried were either not what I wanted, or didn't work on my Kobo

*~=^;^=~*
London, England
June 1873
*~=^;^=~*

I'm not nearly so picky when there's no 'description' of place/time/person or what-have-you

But if it's bothersome, I can change the title to scene change instead of text break if you tell me how

There are two ways:
1) Multiple CSS for first line, middle lines and last line
2) A single CSS for one paragraph

1) This allows total control, and is similar to how a verse of poetry is done, except it uses text-align: left and a left margin etc.
<p class="break-start">*~=^;^=~*</p>
<p class="break-body">London, England</p>
<p class="break-body">June 1873</p>
<p class="break-end">*~=^;^=~*</p>

2) This is inflexible because the line spacing is defined by font or user:
<p class="scene-break">*~=^;^=~*<br />
London, England<br/>
June 1873<br/>
*~=^;^=~*</p>

CSS (assumes default & padding CSS for p, body or html is 0)

.break-start {
text-align: center;
margin-top: 0.5em; /* or whatever */
}

.break-body {
text-align: center;
margin-top: 0.2em; /* or whatever, or missing or 0 */
margin-bottom: 0.2em; /* or whatever, or missing or 0 */
}

.break-end {
text-align: center;
margin-bottom: 0.5em; /* or whatever */
}

.scene-break {
text-align: center;
margin-top: 0.5em; /* or whatever */
margin-bottom: 0.5em; /* or whatever */
}

Do not put line-height as that disables user GUI line spacing, use margins. Without a line-height set the font metrics set the line spacing, unless user overrides.

Don't set left and right margins on anything using text-align: center;

Padding mostly not needed as it is for top or bottom of a page or maybe some other container. Top and bottom margin set spacing between lines, added to default line spacing. Both margin-top: 0; and margin:0; means use default font or user line spacing, not zero space.

The last line before } need not have a ;

The code I posted in post #13 of this thread works perfectly as ePub or KePub. And it doesn't take an excess amount of space.
