Stopping kindle from phoning home?

Hi there,

I have a jailbroken K4.

I can only ssh in over wifi if the local machine is on my 2.4ghz network same as my kindle (remote host machine).

If my local machine is on my 5g network (most of them are) I cannot ssh in over wifi.

I assume this is because, in order to stop the "kindle not authorized as a test Kindle", I've blocked the kindle from internet access in my router settings.

Can I please ask:

(1) Is that right? Does blocking network access block "crossover" of ssh between 5g and 2.4g networks?

(2) Is there anything other than BBB (which doesn't do anything to stop the "not authorized as a test Kindle" issue) that can be used to stop my K4 phoning home?

How do you have your LAN configured? Are your 2.4g and 5g network IP addresses in different sub-networks? If so, perhaps you could solve your problem by modifying your LAN addressing. I have mine configured using the 172.16.xxx.xxx private range and serve addresses in the 172.16.1.xxx to my own WiFi connected devices, 172.16.0.xxx to visitors and 172.16.80.xxx to my hardwired devices. All of these are within the network address space given the 255.255.0.0 netmask and all are reachable.

Thanks for your question. I'm no networking expert. No changes from my Netgear (R7000) default on addressing as far as I know.

The networks do have separate SSIDs (e.g. Network and Network5G).

I don't have "smart connect" enabled, which requires the SSIDs to be the same and lets the router chop and change bands between devices.

I have many devices over the two SSIDs. Whichever SSID they are connected to, they are assigned static IPs e.g. 192.168.0.X in the usual way.

Subnet mask for all of those is 225.225.225.0.

I can ping devices on the 5G network from the 2.4G network and vice versa, however I can't ping the kindle from either, and can only ssh in from the same SSID.

The test Kindle error sounds like something isn't properly set up with your jailbreak.

Make sure you have the MobileRead Kindlet Kit installed, and reinstall it just in case (if possible).
