What are those benefits? When all books are available in e-format and ebook devices become widespread, there will be no need for a "publishing industry", and then we'll see the death of the pbook. Authors will publish, prize and sell their work with nobody in the middle, and that will be ok for me.

Among those benefits are editorial assistance (developmental editing, copyediting, proofreading, etc.) and marketing. Few authors are willing to pay for such services out of pocket (and often cannot afford to do so on the gamble that expenses will be recouped from book sales). It is the rare book that will not benefit from such services.

And while independent editorial services can be ignored by authors who believe they can do it all themselves, the fact is they generally do not do a good job and help continue the decline in literacy in the U.S.

I understand what you mean, but I don't think that's what this is about. It strikes me this is like $4.00 gasoline; kind of an emotional barrier where people say, "Ok, this is now beyond ridiculous. We know the price doesn't reflect reality, and if you jack it higher than that, you'll have a rebellion on your hands."

Many people in Europe would kill for $4/gallon petrol (gasoline). We are paying almost double that.

Gee... I think moving to the US would be a better idea than "killing". If you are willing to kill then emigrating seems like something you would be willing to do also.

Oh, and I am paying about $2/gal these days. It was actually down to $1.40 a gallon a few months ago.

Would you give up your free health care for half-price gas? Because that's essentially what we do here.

You are correct, of course. Almost all the price of petrol is tax, and that does indeed go to fund things like our National Healthcare System. I'm not bothered about it personally, because expensive fuel encourages people to buy efficient cars, which is good for the environment.

I don't know if this has been covered because it's a long thread and I haven't read it all, but I just saw a book that was $9.99 today tagged with the "9 99 boycott" tag. Since you can't remove the tags, it will remain even after the price is lowered. Not a very effective strategy.

By the way, within the last few minutes, I've voted down tags on over 40 books that are boycott tagged and <=$9.99. There are plenty more I haven't gone through. The only way to get rid of the tags is for individuals to out-vote them.

So they finally started this ridiculous idea I posted nearly 6months ago?

I can not agree on some ebooks. Encyclopedia and reference books can cost considerably more than fictions.
There are certain books that cost just way more to produce, and you'll find them with a tag the double of a normal book (or more).

But I agree for standard books. They should have said 14,99 though... I mean the Sony Library barely has any books available under $14!

I've never paid more than $11.99 for any book on the Sony store, and have bought (non-free) at least 100 books. But it might have to do with what I read (I read Romance, History, and popular fiction mostly).

Perhaps Sony dropped the price? I haven't checked the online store ever since the Sony Library refused to work on my pc (which is about 6-9months ago).

Back in those days the average books where sold for $14,50.
Books lower where basically small stories or really books that hardly sold.

I don't think so. As far as I know, all hardcover bestsellers (and others) are $11.99. Trade paperbacks are around the same price.

Love your Avatar. Am a fan of Dr. Who. Have a Honda Element named the Tardis, even though it is not blue. Sorry I am off topic.
