Dealing with Kindle for PC/Mac 1.19 and KFX in calibre

For me, one day, the 3 KU books were no longer downloadable, the next day the only Prime Reading book I have also got the not eligible for download and transfer tag.

Discovered this change last night when I went to download a book I pre-ordered that was released today (it arrived early last night). I usually download via Kindle for PC, add to Calibre, convert to KePub and upload to my Kobo Sage. But now that won't work.

Read the messages and saw that if I owned an e-ink Kindle device I could go to Amazon's website and do Download and Transfer via USB and then proceed as normal. I went to Target and purchased a Kindle Paperwhite 11. The file that downloaded is now an AZW3 file but when I add it to Calibre it still won't convert (or even open via the built-in reader). What am I missing/doing wrong?
I have Calibre 5.36 and last night I installed version 7.21 of "the tools" from "the place".
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Just checking: have you tried this step?

Kindle may need to be registered by signing in to your Amazon account within the program. Some users have reported being unable to sign in to their Amazon account within Kindle for PC once version 1.17 is reinstalled. If that occurs go to the Amazon website and on the manage your content and devices page, and on the "Your Devices" tab locate "Kindle for PC" (or Mac) and deregister it using the "..." "Actions" menu. Wait a few minutes for it to take effect and try to sign in again. (If all else fails then re-install and register again and start over with step 1.)

Question: what are MBP files? After importing my entire Kindle folder into a backup library, they came alongside mostly the MOBI books (older formats and mislabeled fixed-layouts).

EDIT: Also, is it expected to also get a "New Oxford American Dictionary" that I never bought? MOBI file, 40 mb (!). Kindle Unpack doesn't detect a PDF, and ebook-viewer is taking forever to open it.

Those have metadata related to your use of the book, such as your annotations and current reading position. They are not part of the book itself.

All Kindle apps and devices come with a set of included dictionaries for the most popular languages so that you can look up words while reading.

Not so.
After KU went, I was testing printed reading and posting my suprise that it was still unaffected. And that it was illiogcical, as PR is a subset of KU

The prime reading change came a week later. ~3 days ago.
And in that gap, I tested and copied 3 more prime reading books, not because I particularly plan to read them, just to see what worked.

Also, some posts here from Germany implied changes there were happening at a different speed there, unless posters were confused.

Also also, the confusion over using a mobile device browser and seeing everything blocked for usb transfer - I wonder had that always been the case or was that yet another recent change

This only works for ebooks you bought and an eink Kindle registered to your account.

Also some kinds of ebook (fixed layout) can only be bought if you have a fire/app registered. So I deleted such "devices" (and Cloud reader) which means I only have the eink Kindles on my account and thus can't accidentally buy fake ebooks (fixed layout are not true ebooks because they won't work on smaller screens).

If you have an e-ink kindle registered to your Amazon account and are not seeing the Download & Transfer option for a particular book you can post a link to the Amazon listing for the book and someone can look at it to see if it falls into a non-downloadable category.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't realize at the time - hadn't read through all the pages of replies! - that the option had been disabled for all the KU content. Which doesn't much affect my personal reading, since I rarely obtain any books for myself from KU, but for years I've been converting a lot of of them for a friend overseas.

Bought a Kindle Paperwhite 2, but was unable to downgrade the firmware, so now I'm waiting on a Kindle PW1 to arrive so I can try that . Which is crazy, because before a few days ago I had never in my life owned a Kindle of any kind.
