Exactly. I’ll add that there’s also been a loss in moral nuance, FB’s willingness to buck the letter of the law in pursuit of a higher morality. There was a subtlety that’s been lost, too. And without the fun and moral overlay, what’s left is very pedestrian mysteries.

So I checked Hoopla (my source for Father Brown) and oddly it’s got seasons one through six and season eight. Huh. Well, I’ll cross that bridge when and if I come to it.

Yes, I was surprised at how well they meshed, myself. I mean, it's just another variation on the "Chamber of Commerce/Touristry financed this show" cozy mysteries that started spawning after Death in Paradise led the way, so, it's possible that the Chamber/Tourist board might go another season. (Although, anybody else find the mysteries rather...odd? On that show? As if they were written by writers who don't know bupkus about mysteries or the reveals?)

I'm absolutely sure that none of these--(I mean, DIP might stand alone now, as it's practically venerable and probably does make money on its own)--not the Mallorca whatevers (Files? Mysteries), or the cooking one, or Murder in Provence, etc. were produced using regular old capitalist monies from investors. I feel the fine hand of governmental funding in there, making me think "tourists." LOL

Did you guys see that there's a spinoff? A DIP spinoff, with that ditzy redheaded detective and his new wife or g/f, the one he met on the island, trying to settle down somewhere, NOT topical?

Gotta say, that's not really blowing my skirt up. He must be wildly popular in the UK or something. Kris Marshall, that's his name. But I'm not big on domestic sitcoms anyway. I hope it works out for them.

I started with The Rig on Amazon last night, it was okay. Good enough to continue. It features a bunch of well known British actors.

But, dear Hollyweird and Canadidumb writers: PLEASE for the love of heaven, Sheriffs do not answer to Mayors. They don't answer to City Councils. That's lousy, lazy, bad writing. Sure, I know why you do it--you want a cheap and easy way to create 'conflict' but I'm sick of it.

Sheriffs answer to their electorate. They are not hired nor fired by Mayors (especially the now-ubiquitous Lady Mayor, mind you, and better yet, the Lady Mayor WOC, over the dumb white-guy sheriff); they don't employ them, don't pay them, nada. Not answerable. Not answerable to County Supervisors, either. ONLY answerable to the people who elected them--the residents of the County. Period, end statement, end of discussion.

It's nearly ubiquitous now--almost every movie or show with a Sheriff, has this glaring nonsense in it. It slays the suspension of disbelief and ruins the entire thing for us.

I know, ain't no Hollyweird or Canadidumb writers gonna see this kvetch here, but dammit, I'm sick of it. It's not that damned hard to get right. You want conflict? Fine, put in some local rich guy who will run against yon noble Sheriff in the upcoming election, or whatever. Don't keep screwing it up with the damned Mayor (and Lady mayor) shtick, PLEASE.

I'm not sure what to watch next; either the Interview with a Vampire series or Our Flag Means Death.

ATM, we're watching Alice in Borderland and so far, in now--I think epi 4 or so?--it's really tedious. This last episode has 99% been people crying. Jeeze. It started out okay but as I said, this last 45-60 minutes has sucked.

The Rig was an okay time filler, probably quickly forgotten. They could have done so much more with it, but 6 episodes was too short.

A shame about Alice in Borderland, I have had it on my list for a long while now.

I'm still not sure what to watch. I'm don't think I'm in the mood for Interview with a Vampire or Our Flag Means Death. I'm now leaning towards Mr. Midnight, which seems and easy enough watch. I would love to watch a non English or Dutch series, but I'm cross stitching tonight, so that's not an option.

I've been limping through His Dark Materials (the Golden Compass series from HBO) and some of it is okay, but unfortunately, I've developed a real dislike for the main character--the girl--and I'm struggling to watch it now, after Ep. 5 of Series 3.

Mr. Midnight is okay, it reminds me of Buffy. The episodes are around 30mins, it's easy watching, if a bit silly.

My sister was really into His Dark Materials. So far I only watched the first season. I'm looking forward to The Last of Us, but the first episode isn't available until tomorrow on the Dutch HBO.

I liked the first two seasons of HDM, but this third one has really turned me off. Just me, I'm sure; you know what a cranky old bat I am.

Is Mr Midnight good? No. Is it entertaining. Yes. It's set in Thailand, but except for some words it's in English. I like the local spooky things.

I ended up watching Ghost Lab, also a Thai production (but not in English). It's supposed to be a horror, but it's boring and not scary at all. The thing that made me chuckle was that one of the main characters is called Wee, and at one point the audio description read "Wee pants". Very childish, but there you go.
