What was being discussed was someone without any kindle aquiring a kindle for the sole purpose of replacing download and transfer. A PW3 or Voyage running 5.6.1 or lower would work just fine for that. Whatever does or does not happen with your PW3 does not matter.

No, it just had to be released before KFX and not been updated to a KFX firmware. I have a PW3 and a Voyage that download KF8 since they run pre-KFX firmware and have updates blocked.

And for all those who confidently proclaim they will never have a reason to jailbreak, firmware on jailbroken kindles can be downgraded.

Dang! Did some testing. Pretty sure I have a PW2 based on the serial number, but it looks like it got updated. It’s downloading KFX files.

At this point, it looks like my K3 is still downloading KF8 files, so I think I can use them for the KU download. I have two old K3’s.

I do my reading in my Kindle app on my iPad. That always syncs via wifi. I don’t read on any other device. My downloaded copy is just because I’m nuts and like to save a copy of the file for my collection of all the books I’ve read.

Does that mean you’re keeping permanent copies of KU books, even after you’re done reading them?

Maybe, maybe not. They took away functionality from their Music player that would have allowed them to collect information. They sell mp3s which can't be tracked.

That's what it looks like to me.

Though if they use Calibre, it's possible they do what I do with Overdrive and keep a record of the read book in Calibre while deleting the book file itself when done.

A similar issue occurs between Amazon formats. For reflowable books KF8 (azw3) format most closely matches the original format that the publisher provided to Amazon. KFX is highly processed and not nearly as good in that respect. And MOBI is even worse.

This is why I'm not really interested in KFX DRM getting figured out. I'd be much more interested in seeing a way to get the latest Kindle for PC/Mac to download KF8.

There's an easy fix to get download & transfer for a KU book....buy it!

I did a test just now to see whether purchasing a book that was on loan via KU would automatically remove "This title is unavailable for download and transfer" for that book, and it did. I expected this to work but wanted to make sure. Good to know if you like a book borrowed on KU enough to want a permanent copy. (Or at least closer to permanent.)

Hi again!

Sorry to again ask stupid questions, but I'm just wanting to get things clear and there are so many things going on in this thread (I love forums!) Plus I have family members freaking out about their Amazon accounts and they're bugging me..

We don't have Kindles, access to a kindle or anything but the possibility of a Kindle for Android app and haven't yet downloaded the forced update to the old 1.17 Kindle for PC, but can't download anything new (haven't tried the old stuff yet). We have the 5.29 Calibre with the old Apprentice Alf tools - I'm pretty sure that's the Apprentice version.

Just to be clear ("YES, MOM, I'M ASKING!!!"), there is NO WAY to read a new (or old) Amazon purchase (we don't use KU) is to update to the new Kindle for PC app and/or download the Android Kindle app and download the book onto the phone/tablet and read in either of those places?
