That's because the eBook is in KFX on your PW2. You would need a Kindle that supports KF8 but not KFX in order to pull eBook from the Kindle to remove the DRM.

I borrowed an eBook from Amazon that's available on Prime (subset of KU). I am unable to download it to my computer. I could download it to my PW3 but then I'd get KFX and that's not something I want.

Her Paperwhite is not a 3G only Kindle. The issue was that it will not connect to any WiFi network. As I mentioned, it wouldn't connect to her network, my home network, my work network and a Starbuck's WiFi hotspot. Unfortunately, since it was out of warranty, there was nothing that Amazon would do other than offering her a credit on purchasing a new device.

I was the person who showed her how to download and transfer over USB to her Kindle which worked for quite a while until this month when all her KU loans switched to be non-downloadable.

It's OK for the kindle to support KFX as long as it is running firmware that does not.

Yes it is. You need a Kindle capable of KF8 but not KFX.

Purchased books can still be downloaded. Borrowed books cannot.

Jon - are you saying that if a book is downloaded directly to a recent Kindle it can then be imported into Calibre, converted to epub and then transferred to a Kobo? I own a recent Kindle PW but much prefer reading on my Kobo!!!

No, it will download as KFX to a recent Kindle and the DRM cannot be removed. You need an old Kindle to do this.

OK - so any recently published books (after Jan 3rd) from KU will be lost when subscription expires so no point in trying to save them for future reading

pre-PW3 models needed.
Kindle KFX format is the successor to the azw3 format and released with the Kindle Paperwhite 3

i don't think A have been able to retro fit it to PW2 and eariler
