What happens to battery life if you power off?
It could co-incidently be a dying LiPoly cell.

I had fully powered-down the device after the last time this happened a couple of days ago. So, apparently, it makes no difference. The device is only a year and a half old. That seems a bit young for battery senescence. OTOH, my wife's 1-1/2 year old Forma with this same firmware hasn't been having the problem.

A year and a half old the you but it’s older than that, there’s no telling how old it is exactly aside from it’s probably not a device from the launch batch.

Could be, but:

If it happens with powered down, it's a worn cell and not FW. The FW change is thus a coincidence.

I'm trying to revert to 4.34 to test this. My search-fu failed me since I *THOUGHT* I did that by simply extracting the old firmware zip file to the .kobo folder on the Forma. I did that, rebooted and I'm still on 4.35. How do I revert firmware?

Never mind. I figured out that I had to copy the CONTENTS of the firmware zip file to the .kobo folder. Not unzip to that folder. With what I did, I ended up with the actual update one level too deep in the file hierarchy.

Was wifi on over night?

Yes, wifi is on. But, the problem is that I've changed nothing in my setup and I'm now getting sudden battery drains. It's not general battery life that's the issue, it's the sudden, unexplained drains to shutdown.

EDIT: I'm also wondering if the issue might be with the remaining-charge indicator. It seems to be working correctly (though there's another thread here where that person's is stuck). But, I suppose it's possible the indicator isn't indicating correctly and the Forma suddenly realizes it has no charge left and shuts down. But, I'd have to actually measure how long I'm reading to figure that out. But, right now, I'm back on 4.34. So, I'll have to wait and see if that "fixes" things before doing anything else.

I've been turning my wifi off at night because, despite the fact that I have automatic sync off, if wifi is on, my kobo randomly tries to sync, and about half the time it gets stuck trying to sync and just runs until the battery is dead.

4.35.20400 is once again the latest firmware on https://pgaskin.net/KoboStuff/kobofirmware.html. Presumably if there had been any change the release number/date would have been changed.

Supports my theory it was withdrawn because something it used on Shop, Sync or other server side resource was missing. It's been fine here on ereaders that have sideloadmode=true and WiFi usually off.

For what it may be worth, firmware 4.35.20400 for kobo8 (Elipsa & Sage) devices downloaded today has no changes in the SHA256 checksums for the individual files in the .zip archive compared to the one I originally downloaded. This would tend agree with Quoth's theory that the issue with 4.35.20400 was on the server end.

I have an issue with my libre 2. It drains battery quickly sometimes, but I think it's only after being connected to a computer via the USB cable (to load new books - for example). To fix the problem, I force a reboot by powering it down, then back on again. Firmware 4.34.20097 (and it did it on previous firmware as well)

Between this and my "checking for updates..." problem, I wonder if anybody got the battery issues with wifi disabled? If the sync got stuck running in the background that may be why battery suddenly goes dead.

Is wifi enabled? I notice that Kobo usually runs a sync after I disconnect from computer.

That said, I am surprised that it doesn't have a timeout.
