Which was OK. Some of the stories are great. Some are only really of interest to someone who really wants to read everything he's ever written.

Next up: Death Around the Bend, the third in TE Kinsey's Lady Hardcastle series of cosy mysteries.

Just started FLIGHTS, by Olga Tokarczuk, who won the 2018 Nobel Prize in Literature.

I'm also reading a happy-trashy horror collection "I Chewed Mrs. Ewing's Raw Guts and Other Stories", by the inimitable Crad Kilodney, a wonderfully wacky writer.

(WARNING: Kilodney is NOT for anyone who likes sedate writings. Oh, you know who you are!)

Thank you!

I vacillate from 'high' literature to 'genre' fiction - back-and-forth. And often, as in the case above, both at the same time.

My first DNF of the year: Last Call at the Hotel Imperial: The Reporters Who Took on a World at War by Deborah Cohen. Purportedly a history of American foreign correspondents in the run-up to WWII, it’s sensational and not serious.

Just reached halfway through
The Argentina Reader: History, Culture, Politics
by Graciela Montaldo & Gabriela Nouzeilles. A fascinating approach to telling the story of the country, by present a compilation letters, articles and poems covering the period from the arrival of Europens to the present day. Despite a very good friend beinga (Brazil-raised) Argentinian, I knew next to nothing of the country's history and evolution. Now I now a little more.

Which was fun, but the main characters did overlook a major hint for far too long.

I decided to omit reading this one, despite it being the BOTM in a nonfiction book club where I am a member. My decision was based on the "The Reporters Who Took on a World at War" part of the title. I just didn't like this way of presenting history in a book. Glad that my decision was the right one.

Well, better than plowing through. And I reached my decision early, checked a few reviews at GR (i know, I know) that bore out my initial impression and moved on.

There’s also some satisfaction in being able to check off a book, although it did nothing for my TBR reduction as it was from OverDrive. That’s another issue, how library books take precedence over owned books, even thought I wanted the owned books enough to buy them; I’ve struggled with this my entire reading life.

I have four books going right now:
  • My hardcover of The Complete Peanuts 1950-1952. I have all 23 volumes of every strip that Schulz ever drew, and its high time I started working my way through them. I am in the middle of 1951 right now. [This is my January SG Challenge book]
  • My library loan of Lucy Worsley's Jane Austen at Home: A Biography. I picked this up based on some other SG recommendations. It was pretty easy to get as I suspect most folks are queuing up for Worsley's new biography of Agatha Christie.
  • The audio book of Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Wake of World War II by John W. Dower for my commutes
  • My yearly re-read of Tolstoy's War and Peace at a one-chapter-a-day pace.

Finished The Long Shadow by Cynthia Harrod Eagles, book 5 of Morland Dynasty. Excellent. Historical fiction. Combo eread and audio (narrator Terry Wales).

Currently reading The Memory Police by Yoko Agawa (my SG challenge book). Scifi Suspense. Very good. Creepy. About 60% through.

That is a fantastic book; I gave it five stars at Goodreads when I listened to it three years ago.

Yeah, and then you sent me a recommendation on GR because I read so much Japanese history and culture - I'm finally getting to it!

ETA: my only gripe is the number of times the author has used the word milleu. I think its the odd way the narrator pronounces it, but it is driving me batty. The narrator, who has his failings, does have excellent Japanese pronunciation though.

I'm blaming you for the half-hour plus rabbit hole I just went down; your post got me thinking I should attempt to read War and Peace this year, and that got me checking which translations I had (the Maudes and one by an Ann Dunnigan I bought last year), after which I had to check Audible Plus for a matching audiobook, and somehow all of this got me reading about Tolstoy's marriage and then, and then .... I woke up to my time-wasting

But yeah, I think you've inspired me to try War and Peace this year
