Definitely, it's not possible to send an azw3 file. I've just tested it sending one and got an email with this error:
Estimado/a cliente de Kindle: El siguiente documento, que enviaste a 02:18 PM a las vie, ene 06, 2023 GMT, no se pudo entregar en la dirección indicada: .... The document could not be delivered to the indicated address... No problem with epub version. I think when they indicate azw and mobi, are referring to all the versions, including azw3. |

AZW3 was not discontinued, it was never supported in the first place. Which was my point.

Even if you can send a mobi/azw file to a Scribe you may not want to. As far as I know that format would be delivered as is to the Scribe and so it would not support the sticky note feature.

I tested that in order to remotely get a book onto kindle my son had on loan and it worked - well it's coverless, and its a document not a book, but its fine for reading the story but you still cant sideload epub via USB with device connected to PC- strange |

Trivial to convert epub to azw3 on Calibre and use USB to avoid Amazon's dubious "Send to Kindle" service. |

Puzzled....surely when I send an epub via send to kindle, and it shows up and works, then the device is supporting epub???

@stumped Nope. It is just Amazon's "Personal Documents Archive" servers that now officially supports epub format as an input format. That is then converted into a proprietary format used by Kindle and that proprietary format is what gets delivered to your Kindle devices and apps.
The conversion "pipeline" has been able to convert epub files for years you only had to jump through couple of hoops / had to game the system by changing file extension from blacklisted ".epub" into something that was whitelisted (txt, png, doc, docx...). Nothing changed in regards to what format Kindle devices themselves can open natively. Last edited by shamanNS; 01-07-2023 at 09:41 AM. |

Exactly, just like uploads to Amazon KDP have worked for years.
I'll use KDP to publish, but I won't use "Send to Kindle". |

I did lots of testing , sending to my daughter's kindle 100 miles away. it had to be mobi and also had to be what calibre called old mobi format to work. Mobi now fails,. But epub works. How long before that stops working is debatable. A could decree that a personal document has to be something that MS word produces, or a text file |

It accepted dual-format mobi (old mobi + kf8), probably still does. The same as what they wanted for KDP. Calibre will cook that if you select the right options. But this doesn't get converted to kfx, which is required for Sticky Notes etc. For that, you need to send ePub, which is also now what KDP accepts.

Note: Beginning in late 2022, you'll no longer be able to send MOBI (.AZW, .MOBI) files to your Kindle library using Send to Kindle. This change won't affect any MOBI files already in your Kindle library. You can still read them with Kindle. MOBI is an older file format and won't support the newest Kindle features for documents. |

I was quoting what it says on the Amazon page. If .MOBI does not mean 'dual format MOBI' i.e. what kindlegen used to generate, and what Tor and other publishers used to make for Kindles, then I don't know what they mean by it. |
