Happy Sherlock Holmes Public Domain Day

The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes is finally in the public domain in the U.S. This means that the Conan Doyle Estate can no longer sue somebody who writes an adaptation where Sherlock Holmes is "too friendly." Some people are already worried that this means people will rush off to create Sherlock Holmes horror movies (as was done with Winnie the Pooh). Or (gasp!) Sherlock Holmes erotica. If the 1970s could survive Michael Dibdin's The Last Sherlock Holmes Story, we can survive whatever comes next. |

Next year is the big year. Disney's Steamboat Willie was released in 1928 and it's impending public domain release has caused so many problems with US copyright. Let's see if there isn't some 11th hour extension suddenly put in place this year. I'm hopeful that once that happens and Disneyland doesn't spontaneously combust we will stop getting these crazy copyright extensions. Last edited by ZodWallop; 01-01-2023 at 01:37 PM. |

I'm confused. He died in 1930! Bring back Life +50. The extensions do nothing for creators and are just corporate greed. |

US copyright for works written during much of the 20th century is complicated.

Heck, I’d rather go back to copyright for 28 years with a one-time extension of another 28 years. Which was the deal in effect when the books entering public domain now were published! The retroactive benefit can’t be justified in terms of encouragement to the artist, that part’s over, or the public weal.

It is purely for corporates and has little value. It's not even about protecting the names and shapes of say Mickey Mouse or the Disney version of Seven Dwarfs as those are trademarks and probably also protected by Registered Design/Design Patent. Also retroactive lengthening seems very dishonest.

Unfortunately we aren't the ones represented when these laws are being put into place.

The old joke about the difference between an honest and dishonest politician? An honest politician stays bought. Apache |
