Have you considered allergy shots? Not that I think you should try to keep cats if you're allergic, but if they cause you not to be able to breathe... that seems like something worth treating, if possible. Cats are pretty common.

I took allergy shots for years when I was a kid. As long as I stay away from cats (and a few other things), I'm good to go.

Except for the cats on my car, they are pretty easy to avoid. My mother has a cat (which she is allergic to as well) but it lives outside on her ranchette (they have cows and cat keeps the mice and snakes away), so that's not a problem for me. Other than that, there are no close people in my life with cats.

Occasionally, because I work in the film industry, I have to shoot in a house where the owners have cats, so I have to use my inhaler but that doesn't happen too often.

Remember how you told me about the lasers + cats = fun? And how I got a laser in my bag of crap? Well I was just watching a back episode of House and he was playing with a cat with a laser pointer

My cat is the lord of my home. When he is outside he doesn't even give my car a pass. He hates driving and if he even thinks I'm going to put him inside he runs the other way. He would never never touch the hood of my car. Sitting on my keyboard or playing with the wires of my computer is another thing.

As a last resort, plain old white vinegar in a spray bottle works wonders on anything you need to teach a cat to get away from. Also does great in a water gun (my Mom used a super-soaker on the neighborbood tom cat who kept attacking our old girl). The downside is that you have to smell it too,

though outside it isn't so bad. And soaking something in 1/2 vinegar 1/2 water for a day neutralizes cat pee smell. Then another day in 1/2 mouth wash 1/2 water takes care of the vinegar.

I cannot live without my cats and during college developed bad allergies while away from their constant company. Due to that and other allergies to everything green & growing as well as dust made me start allergy shots to make the sinus headaches go away. The shots have worked well enough that I have a pair of Bengals now, a breed I do well with compared to many cats. Though the cats get a bath every 4-6 weeks and that also helps.
