that post is hardly condemning of the firmware, you provide no follow up, no steps taken, no details of the circumstances surrounding it. It may well be a bug, but from the patch notes it's one that Kobo was satisfied allowing 4.34 to stay around while dealing with it.

Kobo generally do not pull firmware for something short of wide scale core functionality breaking issues. I believe that in the last 5-6 years the number of times they've done so can be counted on one hand, with fingers to spare.

This does seem to be the more likely culprit. Somewhat surprising that we’ve not seen more reports of it if it’s truly a firmware issue. But maybe folks are holding out loading new books until post holidays.

I've sideloaded several books on my Libra 2 (via Calibre) since updating with no issue whatsoever. So far I haven't noticed any weird behaviour compared to the previous firmware release.

Have you noticed anything better with the new firmware?

Not had any trouble with USB or sending books via USB from Calibre. Linux Mint 20.1, Mate Desktop, custom Theme, Calibre 6.10 and earlier 6.7.

I don't use dropbox or WiFi or BT and have SideloadedMode=true

I have, I'm a native Hebrew speaker and reader and, as written in the change notes, my device downloaded additional Hebrew fonts. Seems like the display of book titles in my books list no longer requires to force loading Hebrew glyphs by openning a Hebrew book in order to display correctly (but I could be wrong ab out that, it's just a first impression). There's still more work to be done for full Hebrew support: search keyboard, can't browse or download Hebrew library books - the interface being in English is just fine by me, but it's a positive step in the right direction.

That's good.
I only natively read, write and speak English. But I'd use local place names and Irish names in notes and though the Writing conversion has improved it still doesn't do accents.

It's also a problem that I can't convert Hebrew, Cyrillic or Greek words or paragraphs or set language for an Advanced Notebook, only the language of the entire Sage Ereader.

It does load extra for Advanced Notebooks and allow accented Spanish word conversion if I pick that for the entire Sage.

Multilingual support seems only to be inside ebooks.

Curiously the Advanced Notebook created when Sage language was set to Spanish still allows accented letters after changing to English (Some Irish names work).
But most prior created ones still mostly ignore accents. On 4.32 and only ever having used English there were never accents!

New Advanced notebooks allow accents, but I don't know if this is due to changing to Spanish and back to English, or the current FW. I'll later check another Sage and the Elipsa.
The older Advanced Notebooks now seem to sometimes allow accents. ñ works but not áéíóú on their own, but oddly Méabh works. Often it gets the h wrong as it's obviously not in the dictionary.
The iOS version of Nebo seems to allow user additions to the Dictionary. With the Sage and Elipsa the dictionary words are easily recognised but non-dictionary words need written with clear distinct letters.

There is still the bug on all FW after 4.32 that often on Export you have to click cancel and 2nd attempt is instant.

One advantage of SideloadedMode=true is that on Export you don't have to choose PC (really local for later copy) or Dropbox. It shouldn't ask that if Dropbox isn't setup.

For what it's worth, I have imported ~40 books in the 10 days since updating to 4.35.20400 and haven't seen any issues with the import process. OTOH, the only change from factory I make on my Sage is installing NickelMenu. I have seen a spontaneous reboot twice while reading PDF format ebooks from the University of Chicago freebies.

I have an actual problem which might be linked to the firmware upgrade (and it's not importing books from Calibre with NickelSeries enabled, which worked just fine for me). Shortly after upgrading the firmware, my kobo started syncing non-stop, and then it started downloading previews for a bunch of books I have never interacted with before. This also drained the battery, since it was syncing all night. I was able to stop that by turning off the wifi, but it's not exactly an ideal solution.

I've since downgraded the firmware (and attempted to repair my account), and afaict it's not sending me any more previews, but it's still trying really hard to sync itself if I leave the wifi enabled. Since I'm still having problems, the firmware upgrade might not be the problem here, but who knows?

I've not noticed anything anomalous with this latest firmware. I don't remember if I've imported any books since installing it, but for normal functions like browsing my library and simply reading, it works as expected.

That's not a firmware problem. That is a problem with NickelSeries not being compatible with 4.35. You cannot expect Kobo to keep every firmware compatible with third-party add-ons no matter how much we may want that to be.

I'm willing to believe that it's not a firmware problem, but it seems like quite a stretch to blame NickelSeries for automatically downloading Kobo previews from the Kobo Store when the wifi is enabled.
