Of course I did (by chance): my first was _The Player of Games_. If JSWolf had done that he would have found that this "series" is a bit of a misnomer: the universe is shared between books, but a total of one character recurs between books (and she only appears in two and possibly the epilogue of one other); some books are so tangentially "in the series" that you have to read between the lines a bit to figure out that they're even set in the same universe. So the rather grim and driven characters in _Consider Phlebas_ do not recur. (In fact it's hard to see how anyone could read CP and not come to that conclusion because very few of them survive the ending, and most of those are described in the epilogue as being dead by the time the epilogue was written).

The grim scenario in CP is also left far in the past: this is the only SF book he wrote that took place in wartime. The other books are quite a lot happier. Mostly. (_Matter_ is pretty grim too, in a quite different way). It's a universe in which the author was quite explicit that he would like to live (as would I, frankly), and that's not something you get if it's all as unremittingly bleak as _Consider Phlebas_.

I'll admit I do not reread _Consider Phlebas_ very often, nor _Matter_, nor _Against a Dark Background_. _Use of Weapons_, _The Player of Games_, _The State of the Art_ and _Excession_, on the other hand...

then a new interface opens where you can choose the exact html element you want to automatically remove.. just choose the one that affects the whole box of the reviews, and hit create. then you will have a rule in ublock origin that removes this html element each time you open amazon again.

(you can do the same with all things on websites. especially stuff like buttons etc)

that way you can remove the "amazon version" of the goodreads ratings and leave the ones from your addon there.

Now the page loads, then is immediately blanked with an error message "An unexpected error has occurred"

Why do I need such an intrusive method to tell me to login or become a member. Why can't I just browse the site without the intrusion.

Another reason to avoid GoodReads.

better option for that is Ublock Origin with Privacy & Cookie Lists activated. there are specific lists who block "privacy" and cookie popups on a lot of sites. they usually don't break the sites.

Yes, I have people I follow who I know I share common interests in books with, and trust their opinions for the most part. I never look at Amazon reviews for books. I don't like their requirements and gatekeeping, for one thing, so I don't review books there unless it's a special situation like an ARC / high rating.

I keep GoodReads and Kindle seperated, didn't even link the account on my Kindle.

I use GoodReads for updating my read list and to see what my friends read and I do that on my phone. I keep my Kindle distract free and if it has social media connected to it, might as well browse that instead of reading a good book.

ABP seems more user-friendly to me, but at some point I'll probably shift to UB Origin. Thanks!

Unfortunately, there's been some controversy around ABP, such as letting advertisers pay them off to stop blocking their ads. something something looking into the abyss...

oh, I heard that too... not good. Anyway I'm using ABL actually (Latitude, from the Pale Moon team, which however also runs on Waterfox)
