I wonder why Amazon hasn't thought of that?

They don't do anything new until someone else does it and has good luck with it.

This would probably explain why Amazon seemed hellbent on changing the Kindle's interface to look and act more like a tablet. If they transition to Android (Fire) the change over will be smoother. I guess they were looking to the future when they actually would be eInk tablets. Will this open up more opportunities to "jailbreak" future Kindles?

Being in the biz, I've already ordered mine. Will I live to regret it? Maybe, but I have NO no no doubt that my customers will be all over me about this, so I need to know how the thing works, or doesn't.

i've ordered mine, with delivery estimated to be late december.
i do have a gripe with amazon, however. on the bundle page for the scribe, there is a button that purports to "save 20% with trade in". so i decided to trade in both my oasis and voyage. i applied the trade-in value of the oasis immediately on check out but did not see the 20% discount (the policy states 20% + trade in). on going back and forth between 2 CSRs at amazon, i found out that the 20% discount would only apply if i purchase the scribe alone, not with the bundle. so if the 20% discounts apply, it would apply to just the value of the scribe within the bundle - i understand this.

however, it did not apply at all due to the fact that i purchased the bundle instead of the scribe alone.

so my question is - why is the discount advertised on the bundle page when it doesn't apply at all? to anyone looking at this page, the obvious conclusion is that if the user trades in a device, that the discount would apply to the purchased item on this page. i would think this looks like bait & switch or false advertising.

opinions?

Lazy eInk means buying a new one that's not lazy that doesn't need buttons. My Libra 2 is not lazy. It's quote good without using the buttons.

I agree, and I'd have kvetched VERY STRONGLY to the CSR's. Hell, I nearly did the same thing--was going to send them an older Kindle as a sacrifice and get that set. That bundle. I would have been VERY cranky to discover that the discount was not part of the deal.

At the last minute, I decided to keep the older device, but my assumption was as yours--that the discount of course would have been included.

I've grown attached to my lazy eInk touch screens and don't want to part from them. I even find the buttons to be enjoyable companions.

I had the same issue with an Oasis offer earlier this year and couldn’t work it out at all, so didn’t do the trade in in the end. Since then I’ve read threads on Reddit that suggested that the 20% was actually available if you persisted through to the final stage of purchase but it put me off.

I ordered the $499 Scribe package as a gift, so that I will have more time to return a defective unit in the event it fails. So many Kindles have the problem of battery failure that making this go through several cycles of full battery discharge will be the first test. Those of us who are paranoid about first generation failure may want to think about buying a 2-yr warranty ($49). Dead Kindles in my possession: DX Graphite, Kindle 2, and a 4th generation model.

Dead Apple Tablets: 0 out of 4.

Which begs the question- why do people keep buying Kindles?

Easy to swap cell on DXG, though having done it I wonder if it was worth doing. The KK3 is more use. Also easy to swap a cell on.
The 2x PW3 still OK with original cells.

I have the Boox Note Air 2 and also the Elipsa. I find that for annotating pdf's, which I do a lot, an iPad is far better (I use PDF Expert). I love reading books on the Elipsa, however -- I use it without a cover and it is quite light. Kobo has made loading and editing files extremely easy with its Dropbox option -- something that's not there for the Boox or, I suspect, the Scribe. The biggest attraction for me of the Scribe would be the increased resolution. Also, it is extremely important for me that it have a night reading mode, which, as far as I can see, it doesn't. The Elipsa (unlike the Boox) has an excellent night mode.

I ordered the scribe, it won’t arrive till late December, can’t wait to try it out.

I have the kobo elipsa, it came with the stylus and case. I like it, but sometimes it is has little glitches.

I would be very surprised if the Scribe didn't have a night reading mode; AFAIK all current Amazon devices except the basic Kindle support the so-called "dark mode", and Amazon seems to be positioning the Scribe as a premium device.

One question I have is whether Scribe will support Print Replica format ('PDF in a container', used for many textbooks, as many of them don't covert satisfactorily to a reflow-able format). There's no indication that it will (AZW4 is not listed in the specs), but it would certainly be a nice thing to have for students who are pursuing MSTE studies. Scribe has a sufficiently large enough display to do a good job with these.

There are reports (credible in the opinion of some) that Scribe will be running some sort of FireOS, and therefore some version of Kindle for Android, which does support Print Replica.

And of course FireOS would be a good platform for developing apps for Scribe (like the apps we already know of that come with Scribe already).
