safe to update firmware?
I have a glo that hasn't been on the interwebz for nearly a decade.
I think if I can get wifi working and connect to kobo will it automatically update the firmware before I can download books? It is currently ver 3.3.0. Are there any issues in the latest firmware? or with updating from such an early version? |

It's certainly possible that an underlying problem with such old hardware will be exposed by a large operation like a Firmware update, but there are no problems (that I know of) with the update itself, or the process of updating.

Having the kobo glo (not HD) and updated at each firmware release.
Nothing bad to report |

Do you have an example of that? Kobo still supports models that are 10 years old. I doubt they would release something that will break older devices. Then they just won't release it for that specific device right?

Any individual device can have a flaw, either there from day 1 and never noticed, or developed over time, that a software update can trip over. There is no way to test, or expect, new firmware releases to account for that. The same thing happens with any software driven device, be it computers, cars, smartphones, or e-readers,, someone goes to install a new firmware, and either they encounter some serious issues no one else is, or the device is just dead in the water. I've owned many many kobo devices. Most of my experiences have been positive. But I will say, my overall impression, Kobo does not have the greatest track record for Quality Control and ruggedness. (But they are also very affordable devices, and excellent value, in my not so humble opinion.) |
