Perhaps you should try Dark Mode on a Kobo? It seems to do exactly what you are complaining that a Kindle does and Kobo does not do.

This is different from the unofficial inverted mode.

Correct me if I am wrong but when in dark mode, menus, dictionary pop-ups, home screen, etc. are not inverted. Just the text in the book is.

On the Kindle, dark mode is system wide including all menus and soforth.

Yes, Kobo's official dark mode is only for books, not menus. Inverted mode changes everything, so there's no way to get dark mode everywhere without inverted images.

I actually prefer inverted mode to dark mode but use dark mode because I don't want to reboot when I toggle the mode.
