Books not showing up on Kobo

I have just under 150 books I want to send to my device but they aren't showing up on my Kobo even though I can see them in the kobo files on my PC. I'm going to give as much detail as possible in case it's something basic I'm doing wrong, sorry for the wordy post.

Kobo Libra 2, KoboTouchExtend, Calibre 6.8 (I had the same problem in the previous version).

I highlight the books and hit 'Send To Device'. The job finishes and I end up with the Green Tick indicating the books are on the device. Awesome. If I go to file explorer I can see that the books ARE on the Kobo - the author has a folder and the file is in the folder.

I Eject the ereader and wait for it to restart. I don't unplug until the last minute - I wait for it to ask me if I want to connect to the PC again and hit cancel and unplug at that point.

The problem is that the books aren't showing up on my ereader. If I'm lucky it might have added 1 book - it acts as if I haven't sent anything else. (those files ARE on the device just not showing up in the software). I sync my library and still nothing. If I then restart and do another sync it makes no difference.

When I re-connect to Calibre the Green Tick is missing as if the books aren't on the Kobo. If I go to Kobo on my PC the Author Folder and Ebook IS there. Both Calibre and Kobo can't seem to detect the books that are on the device (Other books work fine, just these 150 so the majority of my books)

I've tried:
  • Manually deleting the files from the Kobo directory and re-sending them
  • Sending them in one big batch (Takes about an hour and 45 mins)
  • Sending in smaller batches in the same session of Calibre
  • Sending 2 books (neither of them turned up)
  • Checking for file errors on the Kobo through Windows
  • Deleting the 2 .calibre files from the Kobo directory so it could do it from scratch
  • Disabling KoboTouchExtend - That didn't help but it DID speed the process since it doesn't need to convert to kepub. It went from nearly 2 hours to barely any time at all. I've left it turned off for now
  • 'Send to device', closing Calibre and re-opening calibre all while the device is still connected, the books don't have the Green Tick of being on the device anymore after re-opening it. I'm guessing this is normal as I haven't restarted Kobo yet.

I'm at a loss as to what to try next, do you have any ideas? (I hope all that made sense)

reset your kobo. Then send one or two books. disconnect the kobo give it a few seconds to process the new books. Once they show up on the kobo reconnect it and they should ge tthe green tick in calibre as well.

Once you have that working then send a larger batch.

When you eject your Kobo from the computer, do you get the Kobo processing any of these eBooks? Are you using KOReader and sending to the Kobo while KOReader is running?

I have a Kobo Libra 2, and have this problem once in a while. I've found that sometimes it'll 'Import' the new files quickly, and other times it can take several minutes for it to do so. So I give it at least ten minutes to 'catch up' and import.

Once in a while it won't import even after ten minutes. In that case, I connect it back to Calibre, eject, and then it seems to import okay.

I haven't yet found what stalls the import. Seems to be random so far.

There's a better solution then reconnecting to the computer. You can use NickelMenu to setup an option to scan for new books and import them.
Code:
menu_item :main :Import books :nickel_misc :rescan_books_full

I'll have to look it up, but I'm not wanting to mess with the Libre too much.

NickelMenu is really not going to get in the way. It just sits in the background and does its thing. You get additions to the some of the menus. Another feature is being able to reconnect to the USB to update the metadata without having to unplug the USB cable.

Code:
menu_item : main : USB : nickel_misc : force_usb_connection

Is there something particular about these books? What format are they in, where did you get them from, are they absurdly oversized, are there a lot of errors in them, something else? Can you point us to the source of some of them so we can check them out?

No, it's not a better solution. It's just different. Sometimes you need to restart the Kobo or the database is corrupt or an ebook is malformed.

How do you access that menu button when the Kobo is connected to a computer?

When I connect mine, there is a black screen where it says "Connected and charging" or "Connected and charged" with a Kobo, a laptop and a cable graphics.

It's only when I disconnect the USB cable that the menu options are visible.

Ejecting with Calibre or the system option will disconnect and bring it back to the menu without pulling the cable. (You shouldn't be pulling the cable without ejecting anyways, at least to avoid setting the dirty bit.) The Nickel menu just adds an option to re-connect without needing to pull and re-connect the cable.

I always eject the kobo with Calibre but never thought of leaving the cable plugged in. It make sense now.

Thanks!

Edit: Now I remember why I always remove the USB cable. Only ejecting the device with Calibre will not remove the black screen. Just tried.

The Kobo is effectively ejected as it disappears from Windows Explorer but the black screen remains. It's only after removing the USB cable that the Kobo interface is visible.
