For what it is worth, a book synced from the Kobo Store is stored in the kepub directory inside the .kobo directory with a filename reminiscent of a GUID. Sideloading a book with the same name will result in a second entry in the database. If you sideload epub, it's easy enough to tell between EPUB, KOBO EPUB, KOBO PLUS and OVERDRIVE in the Books view. Sending kepubs does result in a book showing as KOBO EPUB but the details pain will show the path to the book (not to mention sideloaded books missing the Reviews and Related tabs in the View Details

I have never seen an issue where a synced book and a sideloaded book interfered with the other versions reading position, finished or other statistics.

A bit of quick testing did not remove a synced book or a sideloaded book when the alternate version was removed.

I haven't noticed any issues with having both sideloaded and synced books on a Kobo reader as far as database corruption, crashes, lockups, etc.

I have had store books seemingly disappear from the account after deleting with Calibre and needing to 'repair account' to get them back. Even the desktop app failed to recognize them.

Archiving the Kobo version and sideloading seems to be working.

If calibre shows the book count as 2+ and you delete from calibre, you will need to choose the version to delete (looking at the file path works there as well).

To me, that's a PEBKAC error.

And if such a thing really did happen, we'd have already had reports of this.

MGlitch gave the solution. Just archive the book you don't want to sync. It's still stored at Kobo, but it's not seen when syncing. That way your side-loaded book won't be overwritten. Almost all my Kobo bought books are archived.

It won't be an issue really as the Calibre side loaded copy and the Kobo synced copy will have two different filenames.

I didn't know that. But I don't want the redundancy anyhow — nor do I want all my books syncing if I ever have to log out and back into my Kobo.

This is what I do. At any given time, the only books showing "My Books" at Kobo are pre-orders, the rest are all archived

i have a solution that works (IMHO) even better. I keep WiFi off. I download as ePub and load into Calibre. I can then decide if I want to read ePub or KePub. Plus, I'll have my book in my Calibre library.

That too, but every time I buy a new Kobo the unarchived books download automatically and it's a huge pain in the ass. Better keep them archived.

Why don't you use the sideload mode, and then you won't have to archive your purchases? Is there a downside?
