https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer_time_in_Europe
European Union Directive 2000/84/EC makes the observance of summer time mandatory for EU member states (except overseas territories), though a proposal to repeal this directive and require that member states observe their own choice[note 1] year-round is currently going through the legislative process as of July 2020, but has not seen progress since October 2020.[1] |

Yes, there will always be those situations where there is no WiFi. If you cannot set the time, then it messes up Recent order, and time will begin anew every time the battery runs down.

Replacing the unit needs both a plumber and an electrician and obviously since this unit is a whole twelve years old they don't make it any more and replacing it is an expensive sod. There are probably hundreds of thousands of houses in the UK alone in the exact same position. I hate GMT and think the UK should be on BST year-round -- but that doesn't mean that doing it is easy or cheap ![]() |

I don't think I've ever seen a device that doesn't allow you to set the date and time manually. Supporting time setting via network is convenient, and common, but I've never seen it being mandatory on any consumer device. A definite low point for Amazon if this is indeed true. I can see zero rationale for the restriction, save for a method to try and force people to connect their Kindles to the internet. Most likely to enable Amazon's data collection to increase their profits, and for heavy-handed control of Kindles that are no longer Amazon's property - since they have been sold to customers.
I hate to say it, but it's abusing your customers like this that makes them less loyal to you, and more likely to try to screw you back (obtain books from pirate sites, etc.) as "payback". It's a little thing for sure, but the "little things" that Amazon is doing add up in congregate. The problem is, when customers go for payback it probably hurts the authors more than it hurts Amazon, but Amazon is the one causing (or at least inciting) the problems by their own actions. However, when you're the big gorilla in the room, you don't have to care. Amazon is quite the gorilla these days. |

I just checked my two PW3 Kindles. Of course both flat because Amazon does little more than put a sleep screen or blank it, so a delay till they charged enough to boot.
No method to set date other than enable WiFi. The time reset to 12 pm, and can be adjusted. Date stamps on reading will be wrong ongoing. the older search command and menu levels that show date are missing. If you annotated, no doubt "my clippings" will be wrong. Almost certainly the lack of being able to set date is an erroneous or over-zealous desire to protect library/shared/KU loans. KU is anti-competitive with regular libraries as Amazon doesn't buy copies it loans and also may reduce income to authors as it's not just based on page reads but on a "pot" decided by Amazon. In UK and Ireland the libraries have to buy whatever number of virtual copies of ebooks for simultaneous loan and unlike USA also pay a small royalty per paper or ebook copy borrowed (irrespective of pages read). Amazon's "innovative" pay author / publisher on basis of pages read is an invasion of user Privacy, may not always work accurately and breaks the reasonable model of how creative content is sold which has existed ever since libraries existed or content selling has existed. The Internet Archive Library is worse and Google's scanning of copyright works is USA state enabled theft. It's not just aiding search. |
