A set of unsolicited bugs perhaps.

I suspect its a subset of what's in the Win 11 update - but why can't they just tell us which ones - I am not allowed to install Win11, for reasons that are a mystery to me.

today, after years tolerating this minor annoyance... I finally found a solution:

Change Default Folder View of Search Results on Windows 10

(I'd probably been procrastinating that google search since I've upgraded been forced to downgrade from 7 to 10.

OMG, no kidding. Been a vexation of mine for ages. Not to mention a variety of other things that were jettisoned around search in the file explorer, etc. (sigh).

Glad to know it isn't only me upset by such small nuisances
I just noticed, though, that some of my folders set as "general items, details view" were changed to "Pictures, thumbnail view" or "Music" (depending on the kind of files they contain), after applying that search fix... so I had to customise them again.

These programs offer some extra options for file explorer that help me cope with MS ever-unimproving OS, so they might be of interest:

• QTTabBar: http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/ (includes a filter field, which is very good for quick searches. it also provides tabbed navigation, with an option to place the tabs on the bottom of the screen)
• Open Shell: https://github.com/Open-Shell/Open-Shell-Menu/

Never mind, now that you've solved those problems and are finally getting comfortable in Windows 10, it's time to get annoyed all over again with Windows 11: Context menus are getting screwed up.

At Amazon I can get an mp3 album for $11.49, or buy the CD for $10.49 and get both the CD and mp3 album.

Hey! thanks so much for this article. I read it the other day and became instantly a fan of Schneier's takes on Tech - as you say, "there are not many wasted words in the book".

I get a daily newsletter that I delete after reading because it's all time-limited book deals/freebies. Outlook.com decided it'd be helpful and started sending them right to the spam folder. Guess I should whitelist the sender.

Could it be that Outlook.com has an AI that learns from your actions? Is it assuming that if you regularly deleting similar items from the same sender must be spam?

I think a Whitelist might be a good idea, as long as it is easy to identify what should be allowed in. You could start with everything being sent to the Spam Folder, then go into it and when you mark an item as "Not Spam" everything from that sender in the Spam Folder moves to the Inbox and the Sender is added to the Whitelist, and all future e-mails from that Sender are placed in the Inbox.
