Anyway, Kindle has a lot of software stuff that I just wouldn't like, but this new Kindle Basic is a great deal. Who would have ever thought that the cheapest base model Kindle would be as nice as the old Kobo Glo HD or Paperwhite 3 (aside from the 4 LEDs)?

I have zero interest in the Scribe, but the latest Paperwhite and Basic are vast improvements on Amazon's part. I'm curious to see what happens with the Goodereader-guaranteed Oasis 4.

It seems the 2022 Basic Kindle is as good as the PW3 and better then the PW4.

That's incorrect. The current Carta screen is Carta 1000. There is no Carta HD.

Nathan (of The eBook Reader) is pretty sure it's not a Carta 1200. When he compares the 2022 Kindle screen to a Paperwhite 3, they look almost identical.

The four LEDs is what makes me think it's the same screen assembly as Amazon used on the Paperwhite 3, which also had 4 LEDs. I still think the PW3 is pretty good, even with 4 LEDs. But then I may be wrong as the reversed screen on the Kindle 2022 is pretty good, and may mean it's better than the Paperwhite screen. The refresh rate is definitely better on the new 2022 Kindle.

I think HD just refers to the resolution of the screen. A Carta 167 ppi screen (used on the original Tolino Page and the last generation Kindle) does not have HD resolution. The Carta vs Carta 1200 is referring to the Carta "generation." So the Kindle 2022 has HD resolution, but (probably) not a Carta 1200 screen.

Thank you for the correction and the link. Isn't Carta 1000 rather old, so the current Carta screen would be Carta 1200? Or are all the screens still available, so Carta 1000, 1100, and 1200 are all current?

Given that the PW3 came out in June 2015 and the new Basic's screen is similar, I'd say yes to Carta 1000.

I'm surprised to see on the Kindle forum on Reddit that many are getting rid of the new Paperwhite for this one. Something about the size difference. I would still think it would be a bump down, but for those who prefer recessed screens and don't care about the warm light or waterproofing, may explain it.

I don't have a Kindle at all. But going from a Paperwhite to a Basic does seem like to much of a step down. Mainly for the loss of the warm light. Waterproofing would be a loss too. But man, the warm lighting is so nice at night.

I did. I dislike the warm light (always keep it at 0), never read near water, and don’t care either way about the recessed screen. But the size and weight are very comfortable for reading in bed and it fits nicely into a pocket or small bag. If it had page turn buttons it would be perfect. At home during the day I use my Oasis but the Basic sits by the bed and comes with me when I leave the house.

That makes sense too. I am so used to the Oasis that I haven't bought either and do love the warm light, but size does matter. Some want larger, some smaller, wish there was enough money in some of these releases for Amazon to release more than one size of some of the premium devices to fit user needs

I just got the Kindle 11th generation (after applying trade-in credit/discount, about $65).

The front light is warmer than either Kindle 10th and Paperwhite 10th, but at least on this one, does not get as bright (PW10 is brightest, K10 next, K11 last). Note that PW10 has 5 LEDs, the other two only 4. But they're all pretty evenly lit.

With front light set to 0, K11 seems to have 'whitest' background, followed by PW10, with K10 least white (more like beige). When I turn on Dark mode, the K11 looks much better than the PW10 (with zero front light), there's a lot more contrast. It's also better than my PW11 (which is better than PW10)

In normal mode, with reasonable front light, it's a more subtle difference but I think K11 is a bit better than PW11.

With same theme properties (Bookerly, size: 2, bold: 1, left-align, narrow margin, smallest line spacing) it displays a couple of extra lines of text more than Kindle 10th (but same as PW 10th).

K11 is noticeably faster than the 10th generation devices (which both use Freescale/NXP i.MX6 SoloLite 1 GHz, per Wikipedia -- no info yet on what's in K11). And of course it's smaller and lighter than either, 158g vs 180g (PW10) vs 170g (K10).

(There's no Page Turn Animation feature, in case anyone was wondering)

Add in USB-C and 5GHz WiFi, and I think this becomes my preferred backup reader.

And that would have been the one feature that might have tipped me into upgrading from K10. Thanks for the detailed review, you covered everything important!
