Really @jackie_w? I wonder why the method of connection should matter. Seems a bit odd.

I'm not using koreader to read. I use it primarily for the wireless calibre transfer feature.

If you do want KePub, you'll have to give up using KOReader to transfer and switch to wired USB. The KTE driver will not convert on the fly when you transfer wirelessly.

Yes, really. The conversion code is built into the kobo extended device driver, which handles wired connections. The wireless device is a different driver and isn't capable of doing the conversion.

I think you can get kepubs over the wireless device driver by:

Installing the "KePub Output" plugin.
Converting your book(s) to KePub, which adds the KePub format to the book in calibre's library.
Adding kepub (or whatever the extension is) to the permitted output formats in the wireless driver plugin ("configure" the SmartDevice device interface plugin).
Pulling the book to the device with KoReader. For this to work, KoReader must accept the extra formats specification from the wireless driver.

Whether this is worth the trouble I can't say.

I have an issue and I'm trying to find out what might be causing it. It's not a huge deal because I have a workaround, but I would like to find the cause.

A few months ago, I started sending kepubs to my clara by checking the box in the extended driver. Several books have opened full screen, no header or footer, and the text extending past the edges of the screen. Tapping repeatedly will eventually let me go back to the book screen, although sometimes the reader just freezes up. Deleting the book from the device, doing an epub to epub conversion and resending works most of the time.

Now I have a webnovel that I update weekly and it happens everytime even after an epub to epub conversion. I can drag and drop the epub to the device and it opens normally. Also, if I do a epub to kepub conversion, it sends to the device and opens normally.

I really haven't opened that many books in the past few months, so probably 20% of the ones I have opened have glitched.

I would appreciate any ideas for a permanent fix, if possible.

I think there may be an extra consideration. If the kepubs are created in the calibre library they will have a file extension of .kepub. To be recognised as kepub by the Kobo they will need to have a (double) file extension of .kepub.epub. The Kobo drivers (KOBOTOUCH and KOBOTOUCHEXTENDED) already have the mechanism to do this simple auto-renaming. I may be mistaken but I don't think the SmartDevice driver currently has this, does it?

This sounds like a book without a title page. In this case, the kobo reader will interpret the first chapter as a title page and format it strangely like you describe. I think there has to be several things wrong with the book for this to happen, but I don't recall the exact details.

The epub to epub conversion probably fixes multiple structural problems with that book, including the missing title page.

Gutenberg use to publish a lot of books like that and I had to fix them before I could read the first chapter sanely.

That makes sense, something is definitely messing up the formating. I have one web novel that the first page opens like that, but if I can get to the 1st chapter, the formatting is normal again.

What doesn't make sense to me is that it's only happening with books sent and converted with the extendtouch driver.

With an ePub, the first page is taken as the cover.

Have you tried Polishing the book in your library, having Polish update the cover and metadata with the version what shows in the details of your Library.
That will insert a actual 'COVER' (what you see is a simulated cover for books without properly marked covers)

I haven't tried Polishing, but I have done epub to epub conversions. Doesn't that insert a cover as well?

Supposed to, unless you conversion settings were changed.
The reason I Love Polish, it make no other changes than what is ticked

The Modify ePub plugin also does not make excess changes to the ePub other then what it's selected to do.
