I've simply become an increasing believer in "if the sentence doesn't need it, kill it."

Now, that doesn't mean that everybody has to be Ernie, right? But...and I think, I confess, this is likely a vestigial, knee-jerk reaction, from reading all the Indy stuff I do (in the office, how can I not?), that just goes on and on and on and on and on.

I liked the series (I've read it twice now). If you're into magic/mysticism intruding into a modern day setting it's pretty good.
