For some reason the video is blocked, showing that it's "private." But you answered the question. I would be curious to compare the screen to the Paperwhite 4 (7th generation).

The Clara and the new Kindle Basic are more similar IMO. 6" 300ppi, light weight, recessed screen. The new Paperwhite has a larger screen that's flush with the bezel and is heavier. I don't think waterproofing matters to most people.

The new Kindle Basic might even be faster than the Clara 2E (faster page turns according to booklover6). But the lack of warm light is a significant downside, so I think I'll pass.

The video did compare the two. But the owner made it private for some reason.

Maybe I'm too paranoid, but I have a feeling that waterproofing is really designed to make it impossible to upgrade the internal storage, so that you're forced to buy the more expensive models to get a bigger SD card. "We added waterproofing" sounds better than "We took away your ability to upgrade the internal storage" on the specifications sheet.

paranoid? maybe or maybe not. waterproofing certainly takes away the ability to replace the SD card easily without damaging the device. i appreciate some/many might want waterproofing, but i'm definitely not one of them.

I don't care about waterproofing either, but then I care about replacing the internal card even less. 32GB is more than enough for me and even 16GB would be plenty. I don't want to keep my whole library on my ereader. A few thousand books will do. YMMV, of course.

Changing the flash memory on a kindle has always required desoldering it and soldering the replacement. Either operation requires special equipment, a soldering iron is not up to the job.

all well and good. it appears my main objection to waterproofing needs to be spelled out. do you think it will be just as easy to replace a failed glued in SD card in an waterproof ereader as it is in an ereader that isn't waterproof?

edit. hopefully it won't happen, but if it does good luck to anyone who as to replace a failed glued in SD card sadly you'll need it.

best wishes koboy

But the price puts it in the low-end category and you wouldn't (shouldn't?) expect it to have the features of higher end eReaders. If you compare it to the former Kindle Basic, it's a huge jump forward.

As for the Nia, it seems to be all but forgotten in the Kobo world. Often they've put the Clara HD on sale at the Nia's price, and rarely have they put the Nia, itself, on sale. It's almost like they don't know what to do with it. If they updated it you would think it would get a 300 dpi screen but I'm not holding my breath. It seems like the Tolino Page 2 does go on sale more often, but I really haven't followed it that closely.

No SD card in any of my ereaders has ever failed before I've moved on to a newer model. Granted, I tend to do that often, every 2-3 years.

In most cases, there is no internal SD card. Kindle's never had internal SD cards. Kobo yes, but not all Kobo.

I bought a new Kindle Basic to replace the previous generation and comparing the screens of the new and old models is impressive. The brightness of the screen is probably due to having only four light emitters in both as compared with more expensive models, but the new feature I love in this new is it's Dark Mode. The white text in Dark Mode definitely makes it easier to read than white screen on either of them. Reading in Dark Mode seems faster and easier on the new Basic Kindle than Dark Mode on my PaperWhite or Clara.

Some of the new settings are new and I'm still exploring them but I have tried out reading Audible books with it. It paired instantly with my bluetooth earbuds and the switch from text to voice was smooth and intuitive with the on the screen settings. Here's where the bigger memory in the new model makes sense and it's smaller size makes it easy to drop in a pocket while the book is reading out.

I still have a lot of exploring to do with this new model but I already like it.
