I finally watched Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum. I really loved it. It's a found footage movie, where a group of horror loving young adults enter an abandoned, supposedly haunted, asylum. It's for a website, in the hope to get enough views that they make a lot of money. A couple of them fake things, unbeknownst to the others, but then start happening on their own.

I have a bunch of non-English horror on my watchlist. I think the rest of the month I'll try to watch something in English each night, followed by something not in English. That way I can still get some stitching done (can't stitch if I have to follow the subtitles).

Just finished series 1 of The Lord of the Rings; Rings of Power. Fan as I am of all things Tolkien-esque I doubt I will be around for series 2 and 3 when they get around to them. Dull, lacklustre, so many things wrong with it, for anyone who is read up on the appendices of LOTR (which this series is supposedly derived from)
Poor acting across the board, some ludicrous casting, the only thing that kept me goig was the scenery. New Zealand has some spectacular vistas, and then I read that the next series will be filmed in the UK!

Last night I thought I'd try Los Espookys on HBO, but it just wasn't for me. Switched it off half way through the first episode. I watched an okay horror film instead.

Since it's that time of the year and I have a huge amount of (crappy) horrors on my watch list I'll continue with those tonight. After watching HotD.

I also found it underwhelming. I don't know about the appendices, but for me it was the lack of goal or maybe too many (small) goals. In LotR there was a greater goal everyone was working towards. This first season the various storylines were very separate.

I'll give the next season a chance when it airs. But to be honest I enjoyed Wheel of Time more. I might have to watch it again soon. I feel I missed some things, probably because I was sick last year and wasn't able to fully concentrate on it.

Sadly, I've found most of the Amazon offerings to be just that...kind of underwhelming. I mean, that one show, Carnival(e?) Row, had all kinds of potential and it fell flat as hell, all tropey, horribly predictable storylines, typecast characters, meh. All that money and talent and meh.

The WOT? Nah, not for me. They lost me before the end of the first episode. LOTR? Haven't tried it yet. used up my disappointment allotment for October already.

The Tom Clancy thing is passable, mostly. With the tall dude.

The Reacher--well..the best thing I can say about that is, at least he's not 5'6". I don't have some problem with less-tall men, although I'm a taller woman, but Reacher is not 5'6" or 5'8" or even 5" 10 or 6'; he's QUITE tall and it's a plot element that shouldn't/can't be overlooked. I like Cruise as much as the next person, I guess...not a wild fan, don't hate 'em, but...if he were larger, great and fine. But he's not. I felt that the actor they chose was more muscle-bound than the "real" Reacher, I guess, (which is a silly thing to say) but other than that, okay. Not Larry Olivier, though.

That latest thing with Chris Pratt, the Teams member? Man, we haven't been able to finish it yet. I'd say that left "compelling" outside the door.

Tin Star--couldn't make it past the 2nd episode, if memory serves and I really love that actor, Tim whats-its.

We don't really "do" comedies, so I could easily miss a lot of good stuff. one of my crew keeps bugging me to watch something but it's not my cuppa.

Bosch was GREAT for about 3 years. Then it got soapier and soapier, we were forced to suffer through that daughter character (I hate rooting for a character to die, die, die...). I haven't had enough enthusiasm to look it up on "freevee." I don't like commercials and if I'm paying, nope, don't want 'em.

I really wish, if they're going to spend like madmen and women, that they'd look for pick up and do right by some really GOOD book properties. Damn, there are a lot of them out there now. I can think of maybe...IDK, 5-10 different Indy-pubbed or new smaller trade-pubbed books, in Supernatural or Alternate History type genres that would be great.

And who would NOT want to see a FANTASTIC steampunk series, really?

The review in the Guardian today said it was a stinker. Their word.

I'm similarly disappointed with Amazon originals.Jack Ryan was a non-starter for me. Reacher was a bright spot, and their pickup of The Expanse despite inheriting a weak cast. The problem with Bosch was that Bosch was a loner - assembling a big cast around him who needed lots of screen time led to too much throwaway story material. (Some did genuinely come from the books, but WAY out of proportion to Bosch's own exploits). And how on earth could they make such a mess out of Goliath? There is however one truly standout show - Patriot - where a bunch of B actors come together for career performances in a quirky and original story.

As far as Amazon goes: I really liked the 1st seasons of Tin Star, Hanna, and The Boys. Enjoyed Bosch, Goliath, Reacher, Outer Range. Loved Hunters and Utopia. *shrug*

I was even digging Night Sky (and was bummed it was cancelled).

I watched Doc Martin S10 E01 today. The first two episodes just came through on Acorn in the U.S.

Hunters...is that the Brit one with the wonky well-fed dude who runs a paranormal thing out of his...cleaning van, or something like that? No, wait, a satellite TV van, yeah?

If that's it, I actually really liked it. Very different than our usual fare, but I did.
