Joffe Books seem to be making a thing of "Free Book Fridays"...

Today's free book is Murder, Bed and Breakfast by Jean G. Goodhind, which was (per SYKM) originally published in 2007 as Something in the Blood.

The email definitely mentions "free book Friday", but the email also mentions "enjoying it over the weekend", so not sure how long it will be available for free. Or whose time zone. But it's free right now at both Kindle US and UK...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09WFB2Z94
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09WFB2Z94

Spoiler:
Quote:
MEET HONEY DRIVER. HOTEL OWNER. WIDOWED MUM. CRIME SOLVER?

Originally published as Something in the Blood.

Honey Driver isn’t sure about becoming the new police liaison for the Bath Hotels Association — especially when DS Steve Doherty is her opposite number.

Yes, he’s good-looking, but he’s also arrogant and uninterested in partnering with “Bath’s answer to Miss Marple”.

But, Honey tells herself, nothing ever happens in pleasant, safe Bath.

Then an American tourist goes missing. And washes up dead on the riverbank, within sight of the famous Pulteney Bridge.

The tourist was staying at Ferny Down Bed and Breakfast across town, run by Cora Herbert.

Cora’s shifty ex has just come out of prison. The last thing she needs is a dead guest to ruin her reputation.

Honey has her suspicions about who’s behind the American’s death. DS Doherty doesn’t want to know, so Honey plunges into her own investigation.

And then Cora’s new husband is found dead in their garden.

Can Honey uncover a killer before any more Ferny Down residents turn up dead?

The City of the Dead is the most recent (2022) in Jonathan Kellerman's Alex Delaware series. It's on sale right now at Kindle US for $2.99.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B094GS94R4
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B094GS94R4

Spoiler:
Quote:
Los Angeles is a city of sunlight, celebrity, and possibility. The L.A. often experienced by Homicide Lt. Detective Milo Sturgis and psychologist Alex Delaware, is a city of the dead.

Early one morning, the two of them find themselves in a neighborhood of pretty houses, pretty cars, and pretty people. The scene they encounter is anything but. A naked young man lies dead in the street, the apparent victim of a collision with a moving van hurtling through suburbia in the darkness. But any thoughts of accidental death vanish when a blood trail leads to a nearby home.

Inside, a young woman lies butchered. The identity of the male victim and his role in the horror remain elusive, but that of the woman creates additional questions. And adding to the shock, Alex has met her while working a convoluted child custody case. Cordelia Gannett was a self-styled internet influencer who’d gotten into legal troubles by palming herself off as a psychologist. Even after promising to desist, she’s found a loophole and has continued her online career, aiming to amass clicks and ads by cyber-coaching and cyber-counseling people plagued with relationship issues.

But upon closer examination, Alex and Milo discover that her own relationships are troublesome, including a tortured family history and a dubious personal past. Has that come back to haunt her in the worst way? Is the mystery man out in the street collateral damage or will he turn out to be the key to solving a grisly double homicide? As the psychologist and the detective explore L.A.'s meanest streets, they peel back layer after layer of secrets and encounter a savage, psychologically twisted, almost unthinkable motive for violence and bloodshed.

This is classic Delaware: Alex, a man Milo has come to see as irreplaceable, at his most insightful and brilliant.

The 1970's film version is excellent if you haven't seen it. It's also where Quentin Tarantino 'borrowed' the idea of using colors as code names for Reservoir Dogs.
I've seen the original movie and the remake and I like the original is much better.

Bad Axe is the 15th in the Thorn series by James W. Hall. It was published after a bit of a hiatus, and is not published by a major publisher like the previous books in the series. And I'm not totally sure about Dead Last Press. However, SYKM lists Bad Axe, which is usually my guide when I'm not familiar with a publisher. Still, if you are worried, you can just skip the rest of this post. Oh yeah, and BTW, it's free right now at Kindle US and UK, so if you try it and hate it, you can just delete it...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08BPJSDV3
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08BPJSDV3

Spoiler:
Quote:
A simple favor: Recover 23 stolen landmines filled with VX nerve gas and rescue a young Honduran girl, Dulce, from a band of murderous white supremacists. Most people would say no. Most people aren't Thorn. From a Pacific Island base in the past, to the rough back roads of the Arizona-Mexico border, to a tiny town in Michigan called Bad Axe, Thorn follows a dangerous trail that leads to breathtaking suspense. To save the girl and thousands of innocent American lives, Thorn and Sugarman must infiltrate a terrorist cell far from Key Largo. They're way out of their element, but the big question is are they out of their league? If they fall short, the axe could finally fall in Bad Axe. Thorn, who “may remind you of John D. MacDonald’s immortal Travis McGee…or perhaps Lee Child’s Jack Reacher” (The Washington Post Book World) returns for his fifteenth adventure.

There's a TV movie version from in the '90's starring Edward James Olmos and Vincent D'Onofrio that I'd like to see.

It's probably worth noting that Robb appears to have gotten the rights back to her earlier titles, both Owen Archer and Dame Margaret Kerr, which go on sale pretty often, often enough that I don't mention them any more. So if you like the series, you can put your own eReaderIQ on them, or just keep an eye out.

Heretic's Creed is the fourteenth Ursula Buckley title by Fiona Buckley. It has dropped in price (various prices, some better than others) in the US and UK. Still a bit pricey, but most of the later books in this series don't go on sale very often, and are very pricey when not on sale, so...

And also, this is one of my very favorite series.

Kindle US, $6.49, pretty expensive still - buy at Kobo with coupon if you can: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M5FQOOZ
Kobo US, $6.99, but if you use "Partners22" for 40% off, and if you have the VIP discount, it can be as low as $3.39: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/heretic-s-creed-the-1
Kindle UK, £3.99: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01M5FQOOZ
