They were all in the extremes: pricey, promising and all flawed. I bought one, collected several others. But never was able to use any, significantly. |

Easily my phone. I've never owned a proper e-reader. When I saw electronic paper for the first time I was astounded.

The last time after it lost complete power I charged it up, plugged it into the computer and was going to download some books from Calibre, all went well until I tried to disconnect. It wouldn't. The computer said it was disconnected but the reader would not disconnect. Wifi is always turned off. Yes it is a Dud. |

The disconnect failure is one I see at times. It appears to be related to how the eject is performed.

I normally find that an eject performed by calibre succeeds unless another program (antivirus / file browser / command prompt) is active on the Kobo's drive. However if I try an eject at the O/S level the Kobo doesn't show it as being disconnected. This is especially apparent on a ChromeBook where even if calibre is installed, calibre can only see the device as a file system. Rather than powering the Kobo down, just unplug the USB cable. I think the worst ebook reader I ever owned was the Sony Reader. It was so slow! The page-turning speed was agonizingly slow, and the touch screen wasn't very responsive. The reading experience was just frustrating all around. Another huge problem was that it had a short battery life. I would constantly be running out of juice, even when I wasn't using it that much. And Sony's customer service was terrible. They were really unhelpful and unresponsive when I had problems with my device. Overall, it was just a terrible experience and I would not recommend the Sony Reader to anyone.

anything and everything that is NOT the calibre viewer. The calibre viewer is the best ebook reader ever made. Kindle reader will not show display:grid, display:flex, nor will it probably show container queries when they finally arrive.

Nook Color. I bought it long ago, before I understood what e-ink was and how it was different. It was great for magazines, not so good for reading books though. It was more a clunky tablet with a vertical UI than an e-reader though, plus you had to use their charger and their cable or it didn't transfer/charge right. Soon after, I bought a Sony PRS-350 and *then* I understood what e-ink was and I haven't looked back since.

Since then, I've had a Sony PRS-950, Kobo Mini, 3 generations of Paperwhites, a Kobo Aura HD, an Oasis and a Voyage, loved them all. Some more than others. Currently using 11th gen Paperwhite but giving the Kobo Clara 2E a very hard look as a possible replacement. Last edited by HardwareLust; 10-10-2022 at 01:41 PM. |
