Justified text or not? - Page 5

I have reading some topics on justification and typography here on MR, and the weirds spaces between words, bad chapter titles alignments…are caused by the renderer of KePub format, right?

I wonder if with the better hyphenation and WebKit set to geometricPrecision* will be good enough or the EPUB will still be better. What do you think?

If the only big missing thing is reading stats with KePub, maybe it will be worth it to switch to EPUB. Do you have time left in chapter with EPUB?

* In my case, the optimizeLegilibilty setting creates a strange gap between letters of some words…

I would rather not patch my Kobo, at least not while warranty is valid. I know that it can be reverted, but still.

There is a patch to reduce the space between words in KePub. Applying it will not invalidate your warranty. I've modified this patch to reduce the spacing even more. Just don't use Bookerly as your font as that looks awful with KePub.

With this patch to reduce word spacing and kerning/ligatures/hyphenation (using my better hyphenation dictionary), it looks not bad. But you do occupationally get some spots of odd spacing. It's not enough to be a bother.

I know that it won't void the warranty but I have a bad personal experience with custom firmwares and warranties so I will like to avoid that for the moment.

EDIT: Maybe I have mix some things. Can I install patches without NickelMenu? Are they unrelated things?

To put in simple, do patches work the same way than the Better Hyphenation dictionary?

The patches and NickelMenu are pretty much unrelated other that geek1011 authoring NickelMenu and many of the patches.

Since I read ragged right, hyphenation and word spacing are of theoretical interest only. Without micro-justification, justified text is, to my eyes, barely readable.

You do not need NickelMenu. The patches are separate.

It not too bad with the KePub word space patch. I've made it slightly smaller and with the right font, it works OK. Bookerly is an example of the wrong font as it looks terrible with this patch and full justification.

I see. So I can have the patches installed and the Kobo will work as it were stock settings, right? No additional menus or reduced speed?

My big annoyances with KePub are the weird spaces between some words, and wrong alignment with chapter titles, quotes...if you set the Aa to full justification. So "my must-have" patches will be:

KePub stylesheet additions - word-spacing
Un-Force user text-align in div,p tags in KePubs

I think these two could be really useful too:

My 24 line spacing values
Custom kepub default margins

What about hyphenation? It will be enough with the dictionary or will I have to use the Set KePub hyphenation patch? What should I install first, patches or the better dictionary?

And every time that there is a new firmware, I will need to download the new patches and apply them, right?

I know that I have a lot of questions, but this is a bit of uncharted territory for me, and as I said, I have a bad experience with CFW.

No additional menus or reduced speed. And yeah, you'll have to install new patches every time there's a firmware update.

I believe there is a patch for blocking automatic firmware updates.

I think you have to enable the Set KePub hyphenation patch in order for the better hyphenation dictionary to work at all.

In the Better Hyphenation thread I have some posts about the dictionary seeming not to work. It worked once I enabled the Set KePub hyphenation patch.

You have to install the patches before you install the dictionary. Installing the patches installs a new firmware and will overwrite the dictionary.

You can skip them. I often do, as I update only when there's something in the update I like.

HUH??? The patcher produced KoboRoot.tgz installs a small subset of the files installed by a full firmware update. Unless you've managed to hide the dictionary inside one of libadobe.so, libnickel.so.1.0.0, librmsdk.so.1.0.0 or nickel, none of the other files in the system area are touched.
