Resizing booklist columns

In this case I suggest a slight change of text to "Shrink column if is to wide for the window".
Currently, with the other entry that is relative to the content, it is ambiguous. By changing 2-3 words, we could have something more explicit.

This is what I am submitting to Kovid.

Changes:

• Moved all the resizing actions into the dialog.
• Moved the context menu items to better group them
• Removed "Shrink column if it is too wide to fit" because that is what the "Set to maximum" button does.
• Added "Resize column to fit contents"

I think it is solid but if you have the time, sure. More eyes are good. What you might do is what @un_pogaz did, comment on look & feel.

Yes. Opening the header context menu is a bog-standard action that you can put wherever you want. You can also give it a keyboard shortcut in Shortcuts under "Book list header menu". From there you can do anything in the context menu, including resizing.

My concern was: you mentioned a kb shortcut a couple of times and your screen shot showed a floating menu - been getting a lot of overflow faults on my kb shortcut stack

Seems to be working good. The only odd thing I noticed is that 'resize to fit contents' will resize to fit the header if its longer (mainly noticed on my #percentread column, which has a header of 'Read'), but I think maybe thats the same behaviour as before.

I like that I can have the tool in my book list context menu, and I like that I can press Alt+R in the Adjust width dialogue, see all the values, and then press Escape to retain the original width.

So, I tried to put the Adjust option into my Favourites menu -- I couldn't. My right index finger is trained to navigate context menus with the arrow keys until it gets to the option I want before it needs to press the enter key. And I couldn't give the Adjust option a keyboard shortcut either.

Curious to know why the Book list header menu options list (Sort…, Adjust…, Add… etc) doesn't act as a submenu. And whether that could be changed.

I tried the Adjust width feature on a 'long' text column with HTML formatting, and on a column that only has an icon - both good

That said, for me, having this in the context menu is a darn sight better than right clicking the header. Thanks chaley and un_pogaz.

The new action opens the header context menu. There isn't a way to go directly to Adjust. TBH I don't see a need for it as you can get to Adjust without using the mouse.

I assigned a shortcut to Book list header menu. Are you saying you couldn't?

Are you saying you want the context menu actions to appear as a submenu of the book context menu? That isn't something I am interested in doing because it creates two code paths to do exactly the same thing. The context menu that appears when you choose that menu option is in effect a submenu.

That said, for me, having this in the context menu is a darn sight better than right clicking the header. Thanks chaley and un_pogaz.

When they are used from a context menu most (maybe all) of the toolbar/menu items that have a list of actions provide a cascaded sub menu of actions and a sub-sub menus of sub actions when needed.



And it's that structure that allows us to have individual actions in the Favourites plugin



e.g. the Authors and Tags items I have in Favourites come from Manage Categories.

The "Book list header menu" toolbar item doesn't have a submenu. It does one thing only, open the book list hearer context menu. All non-menu actions, for example "Pick a random book", operate this way.
