Also, it's worth noting that security questions and MFA rarely serve the same function. MFA is to make routine authentication more secure than single factors like just a pin or a password and so should be no more inconvenient than a password if possible. Security questions are typically a backup recovery mechanism only used if you lose access via the primary mechanism, like you forget your password, and so can be a bit more cumbersome and inconvenient.
I tend to think that they are also written by people who still live near/at/close to their original homes. I mean...when I speak to or exchange emails with people who still live near where I was raised, all their memories of our childhoods, school years, etc. are baked-in. They remained in the area; continued to run into people that they've known for 50 years; tell the same stories and all that. Some of the rest of us, who left there that long ago, can't remember the time that Mrs. so-and-so got shut into the locker or whatever. Or "that game in 1970," or the like. it's like all memories--those that are oft revisited stay fresher or at least, more..."imprinted" than those that aren't called up. [shrug]

I'm ok with the old memory questions as long as they are specific. One site had "name of your elementary school" and I could never remember which school I had listed (I attended two) and would inevitably try the wrong one first.

Another site had a better version of this question, asking for the name of the "first elementary school you attended".

Another question I've seen that bugged me was "what was the first concert you attended". My parents were classical music fans and started taking me to concerts and recitals at a nearby college as soon as I was old enough to sit still. I have no idea what the first one was.

I guess this question was aimed at people who think of concerts as being a big arena event featuring a famous rock star or some such, and probably attended such a concert for the first time as a teenager or young adult, but it was useless for me.

When people tell you they're going to schedule something and you wait and wait all week to get details. only to find out the morning off that the whole thing is off. And you learn it through a 3rd party.

You could simply choose to always use the first one regardless of how the question is phrased.

You clearly remember it was classical. So could simply answer 'classical.'

This is not a credit file check where you have to match answers they are looking up in public records.

They are not checking your elementary school Permanent Record™ or going through your old ticket stubs.

Oh sure, I could put anything I want, even nonsense as someone else suggested.

But I'd prefer questions that make sense and that I can remember the answer without writing it down.

One of the questions I usually choose if it's available is "what was the make and model if your first car". That's a fact, not a question, and I can remember it.

Of course people living in a big city where mist people don't own cars would find this question irrelevant

That would be incredibly frustrating, especially if you've been holding off on making any other plans.

I went to the bathroom and heard one of my cats scratching the door and eventually opened it. She just stared at me and then walked off.

"Welcome to McHardyWendBell's can I take your order?"
"Number 3, medium, with a Coke, please."
"Did you want just the sandwich or the meal?"
"The number 3 IS a meal, isn't it?"
"Ummm... do you want medium or large?"
"Medium."
"And what to drink?"
"(forehead bouncing on steering wheel) A coke."

I truly believe the world will come to an end at a drive-thru microphone/speaker.

Whut, you think the microphone/speaker/drive-thru is the problem?

I had the exact same experience this past week, with what may have been the exact same person, except mine worked for Verizon and was supposed to be helping me with a billing problem.

And don't get me started with the problems I had dealing with health care companies the previous week.

I have determined the structure followed by most large customer-facing corporations. From the bottom up:
  • Utterly useless, frustrating and time wasting automation.
  • Untrained, unqualified, uncaring, and/or incompetent seat-filling, script following employees.
  • Supervisory staff, who, in accordance with the Peter Principle, have been promoted to their level of incompetence.
  • Power mad, self-important bureaucrats who see their primary job as meeting assigned numbers and checking compliance boxes.
  • Executives who see their only job as satisfying the shareholders (mostly themselves) and media.
Scattered through each level (except the bottom level automation) are a smattering of qualified, caring, competent people. Encountering one is like finding a four leaf clover.

No. It's just where I happen to encounter "the problem" most often.

Y'know, Diap, you DO realize I was teasing you, eh?

It's shocking how often you run into that sort of...well, not thinking. The anti-thinking, I guess I'd call it.

More and more delivery services deliver not during the day, but in the evening. Which is understandable; more people are home in the evening, so less packages that have to be delivered for a second time or need to be dropped off at a pick up point.

Except that a lot, most, delivery persons don't seem to understand that you can live over a store. More often than not when we expect a delivery in the evening we end up getting a message that nobody was home. When they didn't even ring the doorbell. The see the store's closed, and move on. Even if our doorbell has a sign with our family name and even if I stick a sign on the door that someone's home to receive the package.

If possible I usually change the delivery time to the next day during the day. But with DHL you have to keep an eye on the tracking page, because they often change it back to the original evening delivery slot, sometimes you have to change it three time for it to stick and even then the delivery person will "try" deliver it, assume no one's home and drops it off at a pick up point.

Now DPD also changed back the delivery date. It was originally scheduled for Saturday, I changed it to today (Tuesday), they changed it back to Saturday. I changed it again, then they scheduled it for Monday and I had to change it again. The strange thing is that they don't deliver in the city center on both Saturday and on Monday.

Hopefully my DPD package will arrive today and my DHL packages tomorrow, although I'll have to keep an eye on the DHL website.

Dear CVS:. I am not going to rate my experience every single time I buy something at one of your stores. You are wasting your time and mine sending those emails. Can't you at least just put the rating request in the email that contains my receipt instead of sending me a separate email every time?
