As I said, the three fonts remain on my HD after updating, but are not on the 2E. The FW update file size is different for the 2E at 100MB vs 120MB for the HD.

It's the same, except for the missing fonts. The screen is noticeably better (when placed next to the HD). Speed is the same. The Nanoclock add-on does not work, but Nickelclock does. The patches I use all seem to work. The power button operates easily.

I mainly wanted something new, as the batteries on my HDs are fading away. And new is nice!

I did, but the .ttf files seem to be encrypted. "Not a valid font file."

Meanwhile, the Gill Sans downloaded online is much lighter than Kobo's version. The medium is better.

You could try placing it in fonts/kobo/encrypted/ but I don't know if that'll work with the older Kobo fonts (try it and let us know).

What will definitely work is placing them in the original font directory in the system partition (/usr/local/Trolltech/QtEmbedded-4.6.2-arm/lib/fonts/). You can FTP them over, or use kobopatch to flash them over. In your kobopatch.yaml file, place something like this in the files: section at the bottom (change the file path on the left and the font names to match what you have on your computer):

Code:
## ADDITIONAL FILES ##
# Uncomment the following to add additional files to the tgz (like init scripts or hyphen dicts)
# The files will be root-owned, and world readable, writable, and executable (0777)
files:
  src/root/fonts/Avenir-Bold.ttf: usr/local/Trolltech/QtEmbedded-4.6.2-arm/lib/fonts/Avenir-Bold.ttf
  src/root/fonts/Avenir-BoldItalic.ttf: usr/local/Trolltech/QtEmbedded-4.6.2-arm/lib/fonts/Avenir-BoldItalic.ttf
  src/root/fonts/Avenir-Italic.ttf: usr/local/Trolltech/QtEmbedded-4.6.2-arm/lib/fonts/Avenir-Italic.ttf
  src/root/fonts/Avenir.ttf: usr/local/Trolltech/QtEmbedded-4.6.2-arm/lib/fonts/Avenir.ttf

That's a very valid view and I think in this case correct. Also if the creative "work" isn't subversively evil why scrap it?

Deleted.

The first idea did not work.

The second worked perfectly. Gill Sans is back. I learned a lot today. Thank you so much!

How many years did you get out of your Clara HD, and what's the battery life like now?

My regularly used Clara HD is 38 months old. It originally lasted 6+ weeks on a charge until it reached 10%, and then would deplete overnight.

Now it goes for about 2.5 weeks until it reaches about 40% and then depletes overnight -- or sometimes in minutes.

I bought a second HD at about the same time to fiddle with. I figured I would keep it stored most of the time at 75% charge, and after a couple of years put it into full time use as "almost new". This strategy worked well with the old Sony T-3. But not with the Kobo. The much less-used battery of the stored device acts exactly the same as the much-used one.

As an aside, before I knew the 2E would exist, I recently bought a third HD on sale. (Yes I really love these small readers!) I think Rakuten was selling very old stock, because the battery displayed the same poor behavior as my two old ones! So I returned it, which was good because then the 2E was announced.

The HDs are still useful. I will probably give one to a friend who is still using one of my old T-3s.

Sounds good, thanks. My HD is almost new and in good condition, but I like that there is a new Clara 2E out there for when the battery does wear out. I'm happy that Kobo kept the same basic design.

Is it possible to replace the battery, or is it soldered and glued in a way that makes it impossible? I don't care about ruining the waterproof aspect in the process.

From the image on page 11, the Clara 2E uses a PR-284983N battery. No extra connectors, just the + and – on a regular jumper, and the ribbon cable at the left looks like it’s just connecting the top circuit board with the bottom one and they ran it under the battery, so it’s unrelated. This is the same 1420mAh battery used in a bunch of earlier stuff like the Kobo Clara HD, Nook GlowLight Plus, etc. I see it for $10 on AliExpress.

The waterproofing is a spray on the internal components like the Libra 2. That might cause grief replacing the battery even if you don’t care about waterproofing afterwards, though I doubt it.

That sounds like some serious battery calibration problems. At any rate, > 2 weeks for an old battery is still quite good.
