I spent very little on books/audiobooks in August but still acquired more than I could consume in a month with my current reading level. What I did buy was intentional, so that was good. Reading mostly series this year, but also trying to get down some of the backlog bought in 2012. That was the first year that there were numerous deals beyond what I could read in a year - some very enjoyable stuff there! I still have 5 to finish from 2011. Will start reading those in September.

Due to unexpected expenses (cats got fleas...) I haven't bought many books in August. Picked up a few freebies, and managed to read most of them.

In August, I bought two ebooks and an audiobook. All bought on sale. I'm definitely more intentional with my purchasing this year. I've only bought nine books so far and I've read four of them and am currently reading a fifth.

Spent a lot at the current Audible Member's sale, but all but one was on my wish list and the exception was one I bought for my brother. I count it though since I plan to listen to it also (Best of Glen Cook). Looking now to see if there is any fill in for series at special prices, but I feel good that I was able to stick to my wish list. I still have stuff to get that is on the wish list, but have to work out if my budget will manage that or if I should wait and hope there will be another such sale next year.

Audible sales are EVIL!

Well, that's shot my budget for the rest of the year. NO new audible books outside of credits. Period. Full stop. Oooh, I've been BAD.

OTOH, I just discovered that the Forsyte Saga books narrated by David Case are now on Audible Plus so I quickly added those to my library at no cost. (I had the first three, bought a while back, and had read the first two, but got distracted.) Anything narrated by David Case is a definite plus, so some good amongst the splurge.

it’s probably just as well that as a non-member, i can’t see what’s on sale at Audible. I could be tempted to rejoin, but not on the basis of, “I’ll take what’s behind door 2, Monty.”

I see I misunderstood the terms of the sale. Carry on.

I was introduced to audio books with BOT in my car, commuting, but when it ceased to be an option, Audible was the only real choice. And while it sometimes annoys me, it does provide a useable solution to the need for audio books. I no longer commute, thank goodness, but the need for audio books is still there.

If you tire of carrying that torch, I can assist. Other than "immersive reading" in non-L1 languages where I listen as I read, I would rather perform DIY dentistry than listen to audiobooks (and I have tried), so Audible has not had one solitary brass razoo from me

Audiobooks are next to useless for me thanks to being hard of hearing (well, technically my hearing's fine, but auditory processing disorder makes most speech sound garbled to me).

No, no, I still listen, just depending my library or public domain sources now.

It's ok. Some people just don't enjoy narration of books. However, one day you may find it is the only way you can read a book, so never say never! I buy my audiobooks because my library doesn't have what I most enjoy.

One non-joy with Audible Canada is that they are still "testing" supporting Audible on eInk Kindles. I tried Audible when I first picked up the PW4 but gave up when I was informed by Audible Canada that they still needed to do more testing to determine if an eInk Kindle could give acceptable quality and that Audible Canada was not bound by what Audible US supported.

Admittedly, that was when I tried out a couple of Audible books on my other devices and decided that listening to a book was to slow for me to be able to use them.

Most audiobook software gives you an option to increase the playback speed, which lets you counteract the nearly unbearable experience of a slow narrator. I nonetheless find audiobooks to be unenjoyable, as they don't require the same mental engagement that reading does. The audibook keeps playing, regardless of whether you're paying attention.
