2022 Kindle Basic

2007 - E-Ink Vizplex (167 ppi) was used by the Kindle 1 and 2.
2010 - E-Ink Pearl (167 ppi) was used by the Basic Kindle 3 to 8.
2012 - E-Ink Carta (212 ppi) was used by the PW1 and PW2.
2014 - E-Ink Carta HD (300 ppi) was used by the PW3, PW4, Voyage, Oasis and Oasis 2/3.
2021 - E-Ink Carta 1200 (300 ppi) is used in the PW5.

I think the display update for Basic Kindle was long overdue. It is nice that they went straight for Carta HD (apparently) and not just Carta like the Kobo Nia did.

As of now, we don't know what screen type Amazon is using for the new Kindle 2022. We'll find out soon enough.

The product page says, that the Basic is using a 300ppi display, so it can only be Carta HD or the latest Carta 1200. (Those are the only 300ppi panels.)

Are there any good comparisons of 300 vs 212 PPI, or do you simply have to see it in person? I can't imagine settling for less crisp text unless the price difference was huge.

Of course it's possible to downscale UHD, but there's no benefit to buying the UHD version when your equipment can't handle the output. I have no intention of ever buying a UHD TV, as even 1080p is overkill for my viewing conditions. The UHD BD usually costs more, so I wouldn't waste my money on it.

Isn't Carta and Carta HD the same thing? The resolution makes it HD, but it's not like it's a different generation of screen, is it?

Because they can tout the better features in the newer screens and get more money for them. But to do that they need something to compare the new screens to. And, I don't know if they sell the touch screen and front light layers as a unit (or not), but if the Paperwhite 3 screens come as one unit and can be fitted into the new Kindle Basic shell, all the research and development is already done.

I agree. It would still be a significant upgrade and it wouldn’t be cost prohibitive.

Yes, I agree. I just meant that I hoped they’d go for a better screen even though I know they likely wouldn’t ever do that. This still a major upgrade though.

Kindles aren't for me, but Amazon's last two releases have really knocked it out of the park. Kindles before often felt a generation behind. Good for them.

The PW3 screen isn’t be new, but it’s still a very good choice for this new Basic I’m still new to eReaders, but I’m not new to eReading. I’ve had 4 Kindles since May 2019. Three of them have all been Basics. I had the 10th Gen and loved it. If the 11th Gen PW didn’t exist I’d upgrade to this new Basic. I totally agree with you on Amazon really doing nailing these last two releases.

Nah. With its battery pack detached, the Oasis 1 weighed in at 126g. It was so light it was possible for it to leap out of your hands in a suicide dive from the vibration of walking... but also so light that it was really good during RSI flareups. (I still use it when that happens, even though its built-in battery has degraded to about one hour a time.)

Not only in America. Kobo (Rakuten) is doing a really poor job of making their e-ink devices available in more territories, considering Rakuten is also a pretty huge company.

If I want to buy a ClaraHD here, I'd have to pay more than I would for a Paperwhite 5. For someone who just wants to read and is not picky on their library organization (totally not me), it's a really hard sell.

Price point is really the only thing stopping me from jumping ship. I just can't spend that much money on something that I know should be a lot cheaper. I'd just be getting ripped off.
