My 2015 Glowlight Plus and Clara HD both use the same 300ppi Carta screen. When I set them side by side, I can see a slight degradation from the flush screen of the Plus, but that difference is only noticeable then. I've never read on the Plus and thought 'oh man, I need to switch to the Clara because of this terrible flush screen!'

This podcast is basically a recounting of the press release, but Len is hoping to interview the head of Kindle group prior to launch, and will probably have a review device in his hands soon.
http://thekindlechronicles.com/tkc-6...1th-generation It's not really accurate to call it an 'upgrade of Kindle PW3', which is rather a larger form factor. It follows in the Basic line as being more compact and lighter, and in fact is slightly smaller and lighter than the 10th generation Basic (lightest Kindle ever?). It's going to have a newer and more capable processor than previous generation, hoping it is the same as PW5's. I might have to get one when it goes on sale (maybe trade in one of my 'extras'). Despite the lower screen resolution and fewer LEDs, I've found them pleasant to use (too bad they don't have white this time around). I agree that PW4 overdid the anti-glare measures, at the expense of clarity/contrast. I have 10th gen Kindle next to one here, and it somehow looks better with the normal sort of indirect daylight coming in through my office window. Between the mediocre display and comparatively sluggish performance, I pretty much stopped using the PW4 when I got my first iPad mini, but PW5 has regained 'reading share' on the strength of better performance, display and screen size. Some may have had better screens, that seems a common issue with the same releases. Last edited by Paperbackstash; 09-15-2022 at 07:35 PM. |

I bought my daughter a PW4 a few years ago. She loves it, but it's the only eReader she's ever used. I'll make sure not to hand her my PW3 for comparison, based on what I've read in this thread.

Good to know. Thanks. I’d vote PW3 over new. I don’t think Amazon would put in a new screen in the Basic. I hope they have though. |

If they're putting the PW3 screen in the new Kindle Basic, that wouldn't be a new screen. All I know at this point is that the Paperwhite, 7th Generation had a 300 dpi screen and 4 LEDs -- and that's what they're showing for the new Kindle Basic. I think it would be a really good decision on Amazon's part.

PW3 is still an OK OK 6" ereader, for a Kindle anyway. The PW4 side by side was very marginally not as bright (lights off on both and I bought a 2nd PW3 just after PW4 came out. Son bought a PW4 to replace KK3 and that's what we compared) and the only advantages I can see with 9th Gen Oasis is buttons and bigger.
Micro USB vs USB-C isn't important and most people reading just fiction have no advanatge of 32G vs 4G. The 32G is probably cheaper now than 4G at new now. So if the new 2022 Kindle Basic is basically a PW3 with USB-C and more Flash, that's fine and far better than prior Basic models or PW2. |

I would like to see the difference in screens between the PW3 and the PW4. Does anybody have a link to a comparison video that shows a good, accurate and unbiased depiction of the differences? It would be interesting to see firsthand (OK, secondhand, since it's a video) just how far Amazon reportedly sunk in quality, per what has been said here.

Kindles aren't for me, but Amazon's last two releases have really knocked it out of the park. Kindles before often felt a generation behind. Good for them. |
