We could use a violin repairman. One of our 2 violins has cracked due to the constant changes in humidity here. My father, gone 20 years now, used to play the violin and repair them as a hobby, so he is dearly missed.

oh yes, i know what you mean. violins are incredibly sensitive to temperature and humidity changes and sometimes even if they don't crack the sound will change and they need to be readjusted. making and repairing violins is an amazing craft ; i'm impressed that your father knew how to do it.

The work itself is very interesting but it is not a job per se. No regular pay means you can't borrow and face with certainty all that follows.

Thank you! You are right by noticing that the creativity part is the nicest thing. Otherwise, woodworking would be just next to a tedious chore.

Those old woodworking tools are so nice that people snatched them up as decorating pieces and created a collector hobby. Because of this, fabricators of period furniture have difficulty procuring themselves the true tools needed, or just forfait the search by paying high prices to acquire them. If they can find them.

Crazy. I had no idea you could do this. Hmm, but how well would the Mac OS work for a system that doubles as a HTPC?

I wish I could afford Photoshop CS ("Costs Shitloads"), or, rather, see the worth in it (<---subjective opinion here: that is, worth it to me). I'm considering Elements again, though from what little I have seen it looked like, instead of enhancing it, they were dumbing it down.
Yeah, I used GIMP for a long time. Ultimately I found it to be too limited compared to Photoshop.

Heh, it is pretty insane what Adobe charges for this stuff. I actually got my copy of CS3 while it was on sale. It was actually a deal where Elements users could upgrade for cheap. Though even including the cost of Elements I ended up saving like 250 dollars.

No troubles with the DRM Adobe is using with the newer versions? How is the performance with CS2?

Performance was fine using 7 and CS2 (my CS3 wouldn't work at the time but I think that's been fixed by now, couldn't be sure as I'm not running Ubuntu at the minute). You get some glitches, especially if you have Compiz and Desktop Effects running. I ran it on a Sempron 2800 with 2gb Ram and it did everything I wanted it to. Can't remember what version of Wine it was though. I'll see if I can rustle up some info.

EDIT: Here's the official Wine entry on Photoshop http://wiki.winehq.org/AdobePhotoshop

I have just read a product label that left me mildly scared. Apparently cartoons are coming to life, as this product contained Vitamin 3. On further examination it was just a clever marketing technique in that they have a proprietary blend of three (real) vitamins they include. But it isn't stopping me from thinking of Malk, now with Vitamin R!...

Just finished spending much of the weekend completely reinstalling my system. Again.

I now have a dual-boot system with Ubuntu 9.04 as the primary OS, and WinXP as an option (but no network configured on WinXP). I was quite close to getting everything I needed running on Ubuntu, but with an ATI graphics card, the support for 3D graphics just isn't quite there yet. Maybe later this summer.

Meanwhile, XP is not allowed to talk to any networks. (I'll be physically turning off the wireless when I boot to XP). This isn't a perfect solution, as malware can still spread through USB storage devices, but if I have to re-install XP again, no major loss, as my "real" work will almost entirely be done on Linux.

Just took the dog out for a walk at 2:30 AM. The trains were shunting and blowing their whistles at a nearby rail yard at this ungohdly hour. These noises made the puppy skittish and distracted her from her tasks at hand.

I'm thinking of lunch already - and dinner! Lunch will be an Indian buffet. But for dinner, I'd like to take my wife to some place where we could just get some fresh mushroom soup with crusty bread, roasted asparagus, tomatoes, maybe a little wild rice, and perhaps some strawberries and ice cream for dessert. Why can't I find such a place? I mean, it's not like it's hard to cook or anything.
