How do you handle book editions?
Where do you put the edition information, simply add it to the title?
Do you do anything clever with this info (plugboard, etc.)? |

I only worry about editions if I have some need or desire to keep more than one, like a US edition and a UK edition. In those rare cases, I did add to the Title: This Book -US and This Book -UK. But I really dislike polluting the title field with anything other than the title. This was done a long time ago - I would like to go back and clean it up, maybe using tags. The problem is identical titles and recognition of what is what.

I don't keep different editions. Usually I only keep the latest, but then I read mostly fiction, where it's not that important. And I don't have many books with different editions.

I add it to the title (prevents auto stomps for new adds that might match)
Title (V3), Title (Illus), Title (V1-8) <-a bundle or boxed set that assumes the same name of one of its members. The Paren does not affect the sort Anything that breaks a Title Author tie should prevent stomps (overwrite) The Paren also does not seem to mess up a Metadata Search (it also does not help) |

Besides the title, the edition should be in the copyright page.

But when Kovid introduced The calibre:// URL scheme, I added a long text column and linked different editions via calibre://show-book and calibre://view-book links, viz: BR |

I have versions such as (v 23) suffixed to title as I proof & edit.
I'd only otherwise be concerned about editions if very different, such as original and "author's" version of Magician, though I only have the later version on ebook and have both on paper. I've a detective omnibus where I put the year in the title as the later one has not the same collection of titles, though the paper versions have the same name. There are also original and revised versions of Nancy Drew (Simply revised in brackets appended to title). Separate columns didn't seem to be the answer because really it's not the same as a mere printing (technically an edition) that's a different date but unchanged or silent minor corrections (typos etc). |

Thank you for your inputs. Most of books that have different editions in my humble (yet growing) collection are text books. I'd like to keep track of that edition so that I'll be able to compare that info at a glance, to know if I have the latest.
I guess I'll tack that info at the end of the book title. I haven't come across this issue personally with ebooks, but I have run across of having to pick between two different translation of the same novel where both had their merits. I wonder how I'd handle that (theoretical as of this moment) sort of thing in an ebook collection in Calibre. |

I put Tr Name after title. I've two versions of Pinocchio that are different translations.
