Looking for SD images

As folks might have noticed, davidfor has been AWOL for a few weeks.

I'm prepared to help distribute links but one minor challenge... I don't have any images.

Could anyone who has received links from davidfor send me a PM with the links you received from davidfor and indicate what Kobo model it was for.

David once sent me images for both the Glo HD and the Aura H2O. I went back and looked through my private messages and the links he shared still work, so I suggest others do the same. In the meantime, I'll share what I have with you in private.

The challenge is that David seems to have restricted who can access his shared files in Google drive (at least based on one link I've been given), so unfortunately even if the link works for you it wouldn't work for me.

I am going to see if his son could give me access to the files; if not I'd need you (and others) to upload the files to somewhere, supply me with a link and I'd download and host them.

I'd also share management of these with someone else, just in case

Yeah, redundancy would be good. Both in gatekeepers and hosting providers.

Hosting I was just planning on Goggle Drive, but if needs be I am prepared to use other cloud providers.

I’d be glad to at least offer services as a local user back up for the disk images. I’d suggest we have multiple of these, since access to Google drive, or Dropbox, etc can be lost. And as this event has shown it’s damaging to have all our eggs in one place.

I’d also offer to distribute links. I don’t think they should be restricted in the way David had them, I’m sure he had his reasons even if I can’t think of them. These were just images pulled from the device and technically anyone with one of these devices and a computer could reproduce them.

Personally I’d suggest at least 5 people who are long term forum members. It’s unlikely that 5 essentially random people would all be unavailable over the course of 24hrs to offer aid to those who bricked their devices. And it’s not so many that we’d really risk tripping over each other in helping others.

I also think perhaps making new threads for expressly requesting images for different devices would be a great idea. It would make them easy to find with a name like “Kobo Glo Recovery Image Request Thread” or something for the various devices. The current threads follow no such naming convention and have been made messy by various users over the years.

I think the reason they were restricted is that strictly speaking, they contain commercial software. Also it helped to ensure that images were not tampered with.

What we could do to avoid new threads is to request that an admin renames the thread, close the few redundant threads and update the stickied thread to just include the new thread names.

From a discussion I have with David a while back, he wanted to avoid potential issues with Kobo by freely distributing images that contained their copyrighted commercial software. Much like putting copyrighted ebooks up for download would be consider a non-starter on Mobileread.

Ah that’s fair. While it’s trivial for those with a device to make an image might as well not push the envelope by removing all obstacles.

I had a similar discussion with David a while back too. Also note that if we have any new images, we should ensure we zero out the serial number.

Could you provide instructions on how to do that? Then everybody can contribute to a pool of current kobo device images for safekeeping, by perhaps making a copy of their devices they own.

Further, which devices are already available for distributing? No need to keep multiple copies for the same device.
