Decided to re-read Timothy Zahn's Quadrail series. Night Train to Rigel is the first and I pretty much have the same impression as I did when I first read it back in '06.

Just finished A Season in Carcosa, a King in Yellow anthology. This was fantastic stuff. Joseph Pulver isn't a good author (imo) but I think he's a really, really good editor.

Recent Reading...
Birthday Party and Other Stories by A. A. Milne. There are some fun stories in here, and most carry the distinctive Milne voice that I find very easy to read. My favourites are probably "Anne-Marie", "Tristram" and probably "Dear Old George". But like many such collections they're not all great stories. 3/5. It's Too Late Now by A. A. Milne. Subtitled: The autobiography of a writer, which also explains why some personal details are missing, and obviously only covers until it was published in 1939*. I enjoyed this very much. Not that Milne was an altogether nice man, I get the impression he was quite selfish and admits that his brother "Ken had one advantage of me which he was to keep throughout his life. He was definitely nicer." 4/5. The ebook editions I have of Milne's books are from Pan Macmillan and have many flaws. The autobiography was notable for using Eastern Arabic Numerals, making the numerals for monetary amounts invisible on my reader. And for a change of pace... Between Two Thorns by Emma Newman, first book of the five book Split Worlds fantasy series. There were some parts of this that I thought were very intriguing, but apparently they weren't the parts the author was most interested in, so much of the story dragged for me. It ended well enough despite leaving certain story-lines open for the series, but I won't be going on. 2/5. |

1/3 done with JD Carr's The Hollow Man - widely hailed as one of THE definitive locked room mysteries, by the master of the genre. Sadly, Fell grows ever grosser and more repellent to me. He may simply reflect the views of the time, but struggling through them feels like a waste of mine - especially when they're as vomitous as in the attached screenshot. I'll probably finish this one to see how it works out, but Carr will be joining Sayers and Queen on my dump list.

Just finished Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. I didn't enjoy this book nearly as much as The Martian, as the over abundance of technical science was boring and hard to follow for this reader. I do appreciate Weir's descriptive writing, and was able to picture the scenes and the characters.
Some low star reviews are very critical that much of the science is in error. I didn't look at reviews until I was done reading. I also skimmed much of the heavier science/physics/math. It was an enjoyable read I suppose, a nice change for my usual reading. |

I loved this, Fantasy May a Devine Awaken. A debut to a great oncoming series. And I didn't write this book.
Mr. Tinsley has done an outstanding job on his debut fantasy fiction, replete with complex shapeshifting characters, epic battle scenes and a story of personal journey that encompasses the world that he has created. At the outset, the story-which starts out with an orphaned protagonist-who may seem reminiscent of a J.K Rowling novel but the character Marcus swiftly proves he's no Harry Potter. The stakes are higher when he learns of the antagonist's plans for world domination. The combination of intrigue and suspense keeps the readers on the edge. Characters are introduced who have agendas and alliances that take time to tease out. Marcus has decisions to make, a journey to complete, while trying to ascertain who is on his side and who is not. You won’t be disappointed as you join Marcus on his journey in this new read. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09XBNJLVF/ |

Just finished up the Dark Operator series with Angles of Attack. Some books have mega-ultra killer endings. And some books end up whimpering like a scared puppy. Guess which one this was....

Currently reading (for the second time), The Eyewitness, Ernst Weiss's last novel, about A.H.
Weiss is a brilliant writer of literary fiction. I've also read these three other titles: Franziska Georg Letham Jarmila A great writer. I plan to read (also for a second time) his greatest work: Georg Letham. |

Next up was The Tombs of Atuan. Better than I remembered. A random pick: Feeders and Easters, a Neil Gaiman Graphic short story. Not really my kind of thing, thankfully short. Then there was Paddington At Large by Michael Bond. The fifth Paddington book, and delightful. Now I'm reading Dead Lagoon by Michael Dibdin. The fourth in his Aurelio Zen series. |
