Location URLs go to wrong place

I copied a URL generated by the viewer into my web browser, but when another viewer subsequently opened in response, it went to the wrong location. It was "close" i.e. in the same chapter, but not in the same place within that chapter.

It this to be expected? How exact are these locations supposed to be? Any other way to go exactly to a certain place (e.g. via command line)?

Change your viewer from paged mode to flow mode if you want more exactitude , otherwise the location will be exact upto one page, since page sizes are different in different viewer instances.

Thanks, I'll try that! The thing is, these URLs are stored in documents as footnotes, so I won't know the viewer mode in advance. Is there any way, either via URL or CLI to set the mode on the fly? I checked the manual but didn't see anything...

No there isnt, mode is a user preference not something urls can override.

I changed to flow mode, but location references still open the book many (~50) paragraphs away from where I expect.

Could it be an issue with the book?

Possibly; I've had a similar issue with either search or annotation a specific book, thankfully Kovid was able to identify it as wonky HTML and fix it. Your best bet would be to report it on Launchpad and upload the book file.
