99% sure I was on 6.x.x a month ago
(I have 6.1 in my dl folder from July 16th) I'd really like to avoid installing the media pack (for reasons) - I very deliberately picked the N version. And I guess Calibre ought to work on any windows version? (In an ideal world anyhow) Last edited by TornSoul; 08-15-2022 at 03:10 PM. |

Guess I was wrong about being on 6.x.x
Just (uninstalled Calibre and then) installed Calibre 5.6.0 (what I happened to have in my recycle bin) I can now read epub again!!! So... No upgrade for me I guess - Until this is somehow solved.... |

Just tried with version 6.1.0 - Epub not working. So seems to be a version 6 issue (combined with a Win N version)

I'm beginning to think the issue is the lack of media support in the N version coupled with the built in TTS support in the calibre 6 viewer.

Well I'm enroute to testing this. Have setup 3 virtual machines; all are Windows 10 Pro N.
One is being left as base with no updates. The other two will have all applicable updates applied, and then one of the updated copies will have the Media Pack installed. Calibre Portable 6.3 is on all three and so far the viewer error is present. Sent from my Pixel 4a using Tapatalk |

I'll pick this up tomorrow but ....
My Windows 10 Pro N 20H2 install with Media Pack now runs the viewer. My Windwos 10 Pro N 20H2 without Media Pack does NOT run the viewer. |

After looking at the log files check and make sure that C:\WINDOWS\system32\KERNELBASE.dll and **C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\kernelbase.dll is the same version for both systems.
Just for testing replace the nomedia system kernelbase with the one from the mediapack system. also just from a quick look the mediapack is making a lot more .dll calls. bernie **added edit Quote:

The first missing dll is MFTranscode.dll from c:\windows\system32
I suppose I can check for this file and if its absent display a more useful error message when the viewer fails. It's really annoying that windows LoadLibrary does nto tell you which dll failed to load. Or maybe I can try to detect windows N version without media pack, though given the absolute mess that is windows versioning, i doubt there is a robust way to do that either. |
