Blackout is kind of a new thing for Simon Scarrow, who is better known, in the UK at least, for his Cato & Macro/Roman legion military historical series. And although the Cato/Macro books sometimes cross over a bit - especially in the earlier books - into mystery, now he has written what is to me, a "pure" mystery, set in 1939 Berlin in the early days of the war. And, IMO, he manages the transition to the new setting and (sort of) new genre really well. Blackout is on sale right now at Kindle and Kobo US for $1.99. And it's discountable at Kobo US, where Partners22 was still working for 40% off, at least as of yesterday...

Spoiler:
Quote:
During Berlin’s brutally cold winter of 1939, a serial killer stalks the city throughout the Third Reich’s forced nightly blackouts in this chilling WWII crime novel from #1 Sunday Times bestselling author Simon Scarrow—perfect for fans of Babylon Berlin, Philip Kerr’s Berlin Trilogy, Robert Ludlum, Andrew Gross, and William Christie . . .

Berlin 1939. The city is blanketed by snow and ice. In the distance, the rumble of war grows louder. In the shadows, a serial killer rises . . .

As the Nazis tighten their chokehold on the capital, panic and paranoia fester as blackout is rigidly enforced. Every night the city is plunged into an oppressive, suffocating darkness—pitch perfect conditions for unspeakable acts.

When a young woman is found brutally murdered, it’s up to Criminal Inspector Horst Schenke to solve the case quickly. His reputation is already on the line for his failure to join the Nazi Party. If he doesn’t solve the case, the consequences could be fatal.

Schenke's worst fears are confirmed when a second victim is found. As the investigation takes him deeper into the regime’s darkest corridors, Schenke realizes danger lurks behind every corner—and that the warring factions of the Reich can be as deadly as a killer stalking the streets . . .

Oh yeah, and I had an ARC of Blackout to review a while back - if you want to read my review, the URL for my blog is in my signature...

The Mad Hatter Mystery is the second book in John Dickson Carr's Dr Gideon Fell series. It's $1.99 right now in the US, and discountable at Kobo US. Woo-hoo!

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Q3Z2D4S
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07Q3Z2D4S
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...tter-mystery-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
A murdered man in a top hat leads Dr. Gideon Fell to a killer with a sick sense of humor

At the hand of an outrageous prankster, top hats are going missing all over London, snatched from the heads of some of the city’s most powerful people―but is the hat thief the same as the person responsible for stealing a lost story by Edgar Allan Poe, the manuscript of which has just disappeared from the collection of Sir William Bitton? Unlike the manuscript, the hats don’t stay stolen for long, each one reappearing in unexpected and conspicuous places shortly after being taken: on the top of a Trafalgar Square statue, hanging from a Scotland Yard lamppost, and now, in the foggy depths of the Tower of London, on the head of a corpse with a crossbow bolt through the heart. Amateur detective and lexicographer Dr. Gideon Fell is on the case, and when the dead man is identified as the nephew of the collector, he discovers that the connections underlying the bizarre and puzzling crimes may be more intimate than initially expected.

Reprinted for the first time in thirty years, the second novel in the Dr. Gideon Fell series, which need not be read in any order, finds the iconic character investigating one of the most extraordinary murders of his career. A baffling whodunnit with menace at every turn, The Mad Hatter Mystery proves that Carr is the “unexcelled master of creepy erudition, swift-moving excitement and suspense through atmosphere” (New York Times).

Five books in one of my favorite series, Catherine Aird's CD Sloan/Calleshire series, are all £1.99 each right now at Kindle UK. This is kind of unusual since Open Road books go on sale much less often in the UK than in the US, and also unusual for several in a series to go on sale at one time. So I'd grab them fast if you want them. It's a fairly random selection: books 5, 7, 11, 12, and 17 (!?!?!?)

His Burial Too, #5

A Parting Breath, #7

A practical joke goes chillingly, murderously wrong in Queen of Mystery Agatha Christie’s classic detective story, The Seven Dials Mystery.

Gerry Wade had proved himself to be a champion sleeper, so the other houseguests decided to play a practical joke on him. Eight alarm clocks were set to go off, one after the other, starting at 6:30 a.m. But when morning arrived, one clock was missing and the prank then backfired, with tragic consequences.

For Jimmy Thesiger in particular, the words "Seven Dials" were to take on a new and chilling significance. . . .

Per an email I received this morning from Joffe Books, Sixpenny Holding, by Margaret Scutt, is being offered for free for an unspecified "limited time". I haven't read anything by this author, but do enjoy several other authors published by Joffe, including Simon Brett, Veronica Black, Nicholas Rhea, and Jeanne M Dams.

Discover a cozy and engrossing village mystery from a bestselling author, set in a time before colour television and mobile phones.

Marian Stamford moves to her dream home: a snug little cottage in a Dorset village where nothing ever happens. She only wants a quiet life, a home for her unlikely family of two nieces and one troublesome kitten.

Before long, things take a darker turn.
A man breaks out of prison, leaving the villagers rattled.

What are they afraid of?

Marian isn’t one for idle gossip. But she can’t ignore the telltale signs that someone has been sneaking into her garden at night.

And then there’s the gruff stranger she’s seen hanging round next door. Who is he? And what does he want with the farmer’s wife?

It’s up to Marian find out.

But in a village full of secrets, the truth can be hard to find.

Agatha Christie's The Mystery of the Blue Train is $1.99 right now as part of the US Kindle Daily Deal, and matched at Kobo US. A bunch of Christie titles have been popping up on sale in the US recently, usually as part of the Daily Deal, and usually matched at Kobo US. Robbery and brutal murder aboard a luxury transport ensnares the ever-attentive Hercule Poirot in The Mystery of the Blue Train, from Queen of Mystery Agatha Christie

When the luxurious Blue Train arrives at Nice, a guard attempts to wake serene Ruth Kettering from her slumbers. But she will never wake again—for a heavy blow has killed her, disfiguring her features almost beyond recognition. What is more, her precious rubies are missing.

The prime suspect is Ruth’s estranged husband, Derek. Yet Hercule Poirot is not convinced, so he stages an eerie reenactment of the journey, complete with the murderer on board. . . .

An LAPD homicide detective must choose between justice and vengeance as he teams up with the FBI in this "thrilling" novel filled with mystery and adventure (New York Times Book Review).

For maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal . . . because the murdered man was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who had fought side by side with him in a hellish underground war. Now Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit. Pitted against enemies inside his own department and forced to make the agonizing choice between justice and vengeance, Bosch goes on the hunt for a killer whose true face will shock him.

The Black Echo and its follow up book Black Ice were really outstanding IMHO.
