Thank you Fledchen.

Actually, I have some... news. I've been advised by a friend in seeing an influential person who owns a concrete modular house manufacturing plant. They need a *carver or sculptor* to fabricate *plugs* for the molding proccess. I would be doing part of the artistic creative work, carving and mold preparation.

Unfortunately it would be as a subcontracter with all the time related pressures of construction delays and all the inherent drawbacks of being an autonomous worker; something I wanted to avoid.

The good new is being able to carve and sculpt for a living.

*A carver works by subtracting material and a sculptor by adding material.*

*A plug is a detail manufactured for the purpose of creating a mold. It is not made of a noble material but a cheap one such as styrofoam, clay or resin.*

Have fun Fledchen!

That's some news - I hope something comes of it for you

And right now (at 23:10 UK time) I'm eating plain, sweet scones fresh from the oven

The independent thing does have its drawbacks. But the creativeness of the job would be nice... It is the biggest thing my father misses about the work on these large pieces, very little of the fine details he loved doing by hand. Though his Stanley 151's are still the most common tools he uses in the shop, go figure...

Hope it works out for you, good luck!

Still savoring the taste of sushi from dinner an hour ago. It was my second sushi meal this year and it's only April. Unagi is the greatest!

I have the Ulmia wooden planes that I wish I had the time to use. When I retire, I'll do like your dad.

My dream shop would be built around a water mill with some machinery hooked up to it and most of the work done by hand.

Hey, no doing that! You know my short-term memory's shot, so I had strong suspicions I had written that.

And now I want pasta. (By coincidence, just a couple of hours ago I bought the flour to make pasta, which I will be doing some time during the week).

The Gimp...which I suspect you've already given a burl, so I merely raise it for your response. Myself, I mostly work with my photos in Apple Aperture, and if I need to take one further than Aperture or its plugins can provide, I take it to The Gimp. I wish I could afford Photoshop CS ("Costs Shitloads"), or, rather, see the worth in it (<---subjective opinion here: that is, worth it to me). I'm considering Elements again, though from what little I have seen it looked like, instead of enhancing it, they were dumbing it down.

That's why I'm considering turning my lappie into a Hackintosh - because I know it works with my model. I'll still probably go with Ubuntu though, or/and one of the "instant on" OS's, depending on how they look. Actually, I think I can try Presto now in beta form...might go have a look...

Consider it revenge for your post instilling in me a craving for spaghetti or taglietelle with pesto with added garlic (why you would be to blame for me initially misreading your post is another debate altogether )

I've never been able to convince myself PSCS is worth it to me. There are times that I'd like it, but I know I'd never use most of what's there anyway. I do like Adobe Lightroom, though (it's a photo processing workflow software like Aperture - I think Lightroom came out first, though.) - started playing with it when it was still in beta and got hooked

I occasionally use Elements - version 4! Never had reason to upgrade...

So what you also need is a collection of OSes you can boot from memory key, and of course enough memory keys for all of them...

Having just had a look I'm tempted to try Presto on my laptop (I'm trying to get over my addiction to trying every OS I come across - this isn't helping!) - OK, it's actually a work laptop, but... *shrugs*

For those on Ubuntu (at least on 8.10) you can run Photoshop from 7 to CS2 and Possibly CS3 under Wine. When I was using Ubuntu I had my old copy of CS2 running fine under Wine, just double click the .exe and install as you would any other application. Bonus is that CS2 is relatively cheap to pick up.

I've seen a couple of those Ulmia's, a tool dealer friend of mine at the market had a couple... They are nice, and $$$ , I'm happy with some old Stanley's and homemade block planes... Though I did buy a little japanese wooden plane off him for $5 just to realize it cost about $75 new. It's the 9mm Micro-Compass plane with rounded blade... I actually bought it cause I thought it was cute, being so tiny...

With an overhead line drive? Only thing I have that has a leather flat belt is my South Bend lathe...

Isn't that what they've been doing with all software for the past few years? 6 steps to do what you used to in 2 so new people can learn it faster...

i used to have a neighbor who was a violin maker (before he moved back to italy... *sigh* i still miss that guy) and he took me one day to visit his workshop and show me how he made a violin. he had a whole series of planes going from approximately regular size down to tiny (smaller than my thumb, and i have small thumbs) ; they were so gorgeous and cute i wished i could keep one. instead i just took a photo of them. i love tools, especially old ones ; i think they're beautiful objects.
