I just wanted to add my voice in saying the Spacejock series is great. I ran across the first one when I found yBook, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks Spacejock!

I'm more than halfway thru Book 4: No Free Lunch. I'm hoping Hal and Bernie find love, or that Clunk at least finds spare parts! Shhhh...Don't tell me how it turns out.

Writes eBooks and gives away writing software

Simon Hayes, author of the Hal Spacejock series is also an accomplished software author as well as SF Novel author. He has a plethora of programs at www.spacejock.com including an ebook reader - yRead3, a book database - BookDB2, and many other free software tools.

My favorite is his free novel authoring software yWriter5, which I used to complete a novel during NaNoWriMo (I think I actually used version 4 at the time). Simon is hero to a great many budding novelists for providing such an awsome novel writing environment, and his yWriter thread in their forums is always hot the month before NaNoWriMo as everyone looks forward to the latest changes that they'll get to use and they complete their novels in the month of November.

So in addition to great SciFi, Mr. Haynes has given SO much more!

BTW, my novel is unpublished and best left that way. After setting it aside for a few months and then re-reading it, I had two reactions:
1. The drivel I wrote isn't worth wasting ink on...not even e-ink
2. Renewed respect for authors like Simon and others who really can tell an engaging story

Pking, I still have an early draft of Hal from 1994, and it was far worse than drivel. I used to get thoroughly disheartened when I compared my junk to published books.

You can't compare a finished product to a work in progress - for example, I do about 18-22 drafts of each novel. This is a pic of the drafts for No Free Lunch, which piled up and up as I wrote and rewrote the book. (And never mind all the drafts I didn't print, scribble on, rewrite, correct and mangle.)

If you read the one at the bottom (sealed in the red folder with 'NEVER READ AGAIN' stencilled on the cover), you'd wonder how such an amateur could ever be offered a publishing contract.

Simon,
Thanks for the encouragement. Maybe I'll try to edit and redraft that one again. But I think I might be better off just starting fresh if I attempt it at all.

I write for a living, but it's all factual or persuasive business and technical documentation. Who new that story telling in the fictional domain would be SO MUCH HARDER than in the business domain.

Thanks also for all the great software you've generated ans shared with the NaNoWriMo folks and others.

Can anyone that has read the book report back that it isn't just pages of "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy"? Cause if it is I think I'll refrain from buying it. Not to mention we might want to inform the police... heh

BTW Simon, is it possible for me to pay by mail for the ebooks?

Apparently Hal 4 just won the WA Science Fiction Foundation award (aka 'Tin Duck') for the best professional long work of 2008. That was a pleasant surprise, I can tell you!

Congratulations, Simon!

I love Hal Spacejock and Clunk - so I'm not surprised Hal 4 won this award. Well done!

Congratulations Simon. Well deserved.

As an aside, have you managed to see the new RedDwarf?

No, not yet. I'm only halfway through season 3 of the original Red Dwarf! (Didn't start watching it until after my fourth book came out - no cross-contamination that way.)

Sorry, I missed this question.

Payment by mail only from Australia, since US cheques can't be cashed here unless they're bank cheques in Australian dollars, and it'd probably cost you more to order and post one of those than you'd pay for the books. (Notice I carefully avoided saying 'than the books are worth ...')

Cheers
Simon

FWIW, first off the books are worth it as they are a lot of fun to read. And a USPS International Money Order is AUD can be sent.

I use USPS MO's for some international transactions where other payment methods are not an option, plus the cost of the currency conversion is far less with the USPS than at most banks.

I just finished reading Hal Spacejock #1 last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. So, I hopped over to the website and purchased the next two books as eBooks. Well, I expected to get a link to a download page, but that didn't happen. Instead, this morning I received an e-mail with two attached Word .DOC files! While I'm glad to get the books, I am terribly disappointed with the format. When I run a computer program, most of the time I don't want to receive the source code. And when I buy an eBook, I don't expect the source files. Yes, I'm comfortable using Mobipocket Creator and Calibre to convert the source file into one compatible with my Kindle or Sony reader -- but I shouldn't have to do that.
