Even worse, one of these series ended on book 11. At least make it 12 so it's even!!!

EDIT: Also, back in the 1980s there was a children's series that the last book left a few things dangling. I think some decade ago, I found the author's email and decided to inquire... turned out the publisher discontinued the series.

I (maybe half-jokingly) suggested that if she could get the rights back, she should rewrite and self-publish. A few years later, guess what I find available on Amazon?
Yeah, there were several such cases back before ebook days. One author I liked (Doris Egan/Jane Emerson) was unfortunate enough to leave both of her series unfinished. The first was discontinued by the publisher, the second was more mysterious and I still don't know the exact reason. Health issues, I think. Both are still unfinished and will presumably stay so. Not every author wants to self-publish.

She'd had two very successful fantasy series before that, all set in the same world/universe and she popped along with Ambrai, did two books, stopped book two on something:

SPOILER, SPOILER!
Spoiler:
The death of a major, beloved character

and then, BAM the damn book ended and that was that. The promised third book never appeared, or if it did, it was seriously like 25 years later and I think I read it's dreck.

That was the beginning of the end for me with cliffhangers. I've been Rawn-burned.

By cliffhangers, I don't mean, longer-term unresolved story arcs, like..."will Harry Dresden get together with whats-er-name," or the like. I mean, failing to end a book with something that actually resolved the current plot elements of the current book. (Does Harry catch the murderer, or the like.)

I don't have a problem with longer story arcs. But I do resent feeling like my goose is being plucked, to mix my metaphors, for the almighty $2.99 or what-have-you.

The last book in the Exiles series by Rawn is not in print and it's not available as an eBook.

And George R.R. Martin can't get his ass in gear and work on Game of Thrones to finish the series. And will fans be pissed off if the ending doesn't match the TV series?

I for one probably won't be reading it, even if by some miracle he finishes it. Too much time has passed and I've moved on.

(I said "probably" because, you know, never say never...)

I'll read the series from the start if it's finished and the remaining books are reviewed well enough.

I thought The Game of Thrones TV series was finished? Are you talking about a spinoff TV series?

He's talking about the book series. On which the TV series was based.

I'm glad your 'story' had a happy ending. An author who created a series was in a similar situation when she left Hachette India - she had to leave her creation behind too, a series character I had enjoyed for several books. No 'rescue' was ever arranged

Thankfully, in this case, I think the publisher went defunct, which probably made things easier.

He should get his titles and series names correct. The first book (not counting prequels, histories, ...) is called A Game of Thrones. The book series is called A Song of Ice and Fire.

Right. Nothing wrong with a Serial or a Series that has standalone members.
Anyone remember 'Ruth'? (I think that was an accidental character that all the fans jumped upon)

I subscribed to Analog SF&Fact for almost 40 Years. I read the likes of Pern, Dune and others in Serial form.

FWIW I still believe some 'Series' were never intended, the story just got away from the Author (or the fans sent death threats MORE)

I find it interesting everybody complains about GRR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire and seem to forget about some other authors for example Patrick Rothfuss. Their are others as well.

What ticks me off is now we find other series being compared to "GOT" and they are nothing like the book series.

And Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicle is highly overrated as well as 8 years unfinished.
